The Steam Deck needs a kickstand. Deckmate’s is perfect

If I hold a controller for too many hours, it makes my hands ache. First there’s pain, then my hands get tingly, like they’ve fallen asleep. It happens to me that my Nintendo Switch, lightweight controller, and phone all feel the exact same, so the Steam Deck seemed a bit out of place. I didn’t even have to hold one to know its size and weight would be a major issue.

The Switch at least has a kickstand which removes the problem of the console’s weight for people with hand problems. But the Steam Deck doesn’t. I’ve struggled to play it comfortably until very recently, when I found the one essential accessory all Steam Deck owners need: the Deckmate kickstand. It’s part of a robust, modular system that allows for multiple add-ons and mounting options.

The kickstand itself is sturdy, attaching to the Steam Deck with what’s called the Deckmate Grip. The plastic claw fits into the air vents without blocking them! It is located at the base of the handheld console. It’s not going to move.

The Deckmate kickstand is super simple, but absolutely essential, given the Steam Deck’s size. Playing from the couch, I can set the Steam Deck down on an end table for breaks during cutscenes, but it’s also far more comfortable to have it rest on a table during active play. A separate controller can be used to control the Steam Deck. The only downside is that the Steam Deck doesn’t fit into its carrying case with the kickstand on. It still fits in the case with only the plastic claw.

Deckmate is a modular platform. You can also attach other accessories to the grip, such as a universal adapter that allows you to attach a battery pack or a wall mount and a VESA mounting.

While the whole system can be purchased for $49 (the total cost is $49), you may also find other bundles which include accessories that provide grip. Each bundle includes a kickstand for $35 and other accessories that range between $30 and $40. The files can be downloaded to your 3D printer. You can then print the accessories. That’s free, but there are options to pay what you can.
