The now legendary Invisible Sun RPG returns with 30 pounds of secrets
Game masters looking to add something truly striking to their collection can sign up starting Tuesday for the BackerKit campaign for Monte Cook Games’ Invisible SunThe legendary 30-pound cube-shaped tabletop RPG is packaged inside a black box.
A surreal fantasy setting, Invisible SunThe story takes place in a multiverse of eight worlds each with its own rules, suns and people. There are also sinister parallel dimensions. This universe is a shadow of our own, with a talking apple on a book-made ship, an explorer who finds a key to an old library, or the physical manifestations of days on the trains.
After its initial release in 2018, copies of the second printing in 2019 sold out within months. The price of the game has not changed despite an increase in shipping and production costs. It is still $252 which is a high cost for a RPG.
But there’s literally a lot to unpack in the Black Cube, Invisible Sun’s box set. The box set contains 4 hardcover books with 600 pages total of content. The game also includes 1,000 unique cards that contain spells, powers, and incantations.
The key to magic Invisible SunEach character can use a weapon. They’ll explore the many realms to learn the secrets of reality, including uncovering information about the recent war that took place in Satyrine, the City of Notions. Although few remember the events, all the players will have a connection to it.
Invisible Sun employs the Cypher developed by Monte Cook. Numenera The Sooth Deck is a deck of cards that looks like a Tarot. The cards can be used to predict the future and past. They are placed onto a Path of Suns board game, while the ascendant is held by a cast resin hand called the Testament of Suns. The cards are arranged to determine the magical effect. The Black Cube contains all of these elements.
You’ll also find 220 wooden markers used to track character stats, custom crystalline dice, and a sheet of tokens representing other game elements. There are character envelopes with tips and rules, reference sheets for each of the game’s classes, and a separate envelope of pre-generated characters.
GMs also receive a notebook, two maps — one of Satyrine and another showing the Path of Suns — and in-setting handouts and props to fully immerse players in the world. There’s also an art book just to show off some of the game’s surreal imagery.
The BackerKit campaign will reprint not only the Black Cube but the Vislae Kit, a smaller box that just includes what players need for the game, so they don’t need to use their GM’s copy. Since the first printing, neither product has undergone any substantive modifications.
Monte Cook has also announced that it will reprint limited quantities Invisible Sun’s supplements. They include Silent Streets: Secrets of Silent StreetsThe 192-page Bestiary and a guide with plot hooks to Satyrine’s 17 districts and its people Teratology.
