We’re beyond thrilled to share the latest installment of The Long Dark’s Wintermute story mode with Xbox players today. This marks yet another milestone in the history of strong collaboration between Hinterland, Xbox and other companies. It dates back to when Xbox was launched. The Long Dark‘s Xbox Game Preview in 2015.
Then, The Long DarkAlthough the game had been successful on PC, we didn’t have any plans for bringing it to console. This changed in a phone call with the team late 2014. [email protected]They shared with us their plans to launch an early access program. This was the first time that consoles have ever seen it. The team asked us if we would like to assist in launching this program. We accepted, determined to make this a reality. With some hard work, we were able, within 26 days, to have no Xbox build at all, to be running on the platform, and to pass certification to make it ready for launch.
We were selected to be one of the two Xbox Game Preview Launch titles at E3 2015. This culminated in our hard work! This was an important moment for our little studio. We were able to demo on the show floor with huge, first-party giants and had our game featured in the Microsoft Media Event. Halo Gears of WarLaunching the first day E3.
Game Preview is a must-see The Long Dark’s place on Xbox, and it helped us build a community of players who are still with us to this day. Since we introduced this feature, the group has only grown. The Long DarkXbox Game Pass will return in 2020 Xbox has some of our most enthusiastic players.
Today we’re thrilled to share Episode 4: Fury and Then Silence. It continues the story of bush pilot Will Mackenzie, in his search for Dr. Astrid Greenwood amongst the frigid, dangerous wilds of Great Bear island in Canada’s deep north. Astrid and Mackenzie are all struggling to survive harsh winters and the brutal wildlife without any human-made conveniences. The fourth episode introduces a group of bloodthirsty convicts who are eager to make a mark on Great Bear by exploiting these circumstances. Mackenzie is forced to face this new danger in order to find Astrid.
We call our setting the “Quiet Apocalypse.” It’s not the typical end-of-the-world scenario with zombies, or aliens, or supernatural beasts. Only humanity will be affected by technology’s overreliance and loss of community and skills that make us more vulnerable to society being turned upside down. Mother Nature controls the world, but she does not interfere with your existence. Even though we explored this topic years ago it became unexpectedly important during the 18+ month COVID lockdown. We are most happy when players feel a sense of calm and thoughtful escape into the peaceful wilderness. The Long DarkThis is what we do. This is why we make the things we make — to touch players deeply.
Episode Four launches today. We now turn our attention to Episode Five, the end of the Wintermute story, and ongoing support for Survival Mode as we strive to make Survival Mode the most popular survival game on the planet. Thank you to the Xbox player community for years of support along the way — all the feedback you’ve shared, all the times you told your friends to check out the game, and all the small ways in which you enrich The Long Dark’s community. We will never forget you.
The years that are behind us pale in comparison to what lies ahead. Enjoy Episode Four, and we’ll see you in the Quiet Apocalypse.
