You can now start the Slayer class Phantasy Star Online 2 New GenesisThe online RPG game that allows you to create your hero and embark on endless adventures.

It would be an understatement to say that Slayer is a beneficiary of movement. The class thrives off movement. This class thrives on movement. Slayer benefits by agility built into their actions (Photon Arts (PA)), and unlocks additional actions from their Class Skill tree. Intrigued? If mastery of this subject is your goal, you should be.

There’s Nothing Normal About Slayer

The Slayer’s normal attack is a triple threat, in that they perform a series of attacks that can combo up to three times. Holding the normal attack button can cause an attack to be charged. As though these moves didn’t already bely the phrase “normal attack,” there are also two levels of charge, wherein the first level of charge releases a 5-shot ranged attack and the second level of charge provokes a powerful attack, though takes longer to deploy. The Slayer’s normal attacks become even more specialized with the Class Skill “Charged Blade.” This allows the player to not only close the distance to their enemy, but also perform a thrust attack by pressing the Weapon Action button at just the right time after a charged, normal attack. Finally, normal attacks made by the Slayer can also benefit Photon Arts, as the Class Skill “Relentless Blade” provides an additional attack when the normal attack button is pressed at just the right time while performing a Photon Art. You can clearly see that normal attacks can work in many combat situations. Therefore, it is important to understand them before you start playing Slayer.

Slayer: The Focus

Gunblades can be used by anyone, regardless of class. Anyone who chooses to take Slayer as a subclass may use them. Additional benefits, such as an increase in attack potency or reduced PP consumption, are activated when you focus on landing Gunblade attacks and your gauge level. But, if you don’t land attacks in a given time period, the gear level can reset. This gives new meaning to the phrase “don’t lose your focus on the battlefield”.

Slayering the Art

A series of photon arts can bring out the beauty in every class. The optimal PA pattern can control fights and reduce damage, while also keeping the player well-supplied in Photon Power (PP), and healing. The optimal pattern of PAs for the Slayer is something that will probably become the next hot topic (though I’ll take a stab at it in one of the following sections), as there are a lot of variations when movement or enemy behavior is considered. The optimal Slayer combat does not consist of a “do x”, do y, then use big attacks to accomplish x. No, you’ll need a deeper understanding to truly master it.

When performed stationary, their first Photon Art is Shifting Spica. It unleashes two quick, close-range attacks. Slayer moves to charge their enemy and fires a short-range photon bullet. Although it may not work in all combat situations, this gap close can be very useful for those enemies who like to move.

The Slayer can use Flowing Sirius to do multiple slash attacks while stationary, both solo or in group combat. Repeating this PA will make the second attack stronger. The Slayer can move and perform area attacks, while also gaining elevation over the field. Alternating these two forms of Flowing Sirius is an excellent way to reposition yourself and take advantage of your enemy’s placement.

The handy, temporary respite of Reaping Regulus can be used when you are stationary. It involves running fast after hurling a photon bomb in the fray and then retreating quickly. The PA shines in the brief interlude between engagements, however. If you perform it in motion, this means that you will throw a photon bomb at your next group hostiles. Either form of the PA will add some ticks to your Gunblade Focus Gauge.

Waving Rigel may be the most popular PA. It involves the Slayer hitting their weapon in the ground to create a shockwave and sending it crashing into any nearby enemies. The shockwave will be unleashed if the Slayer is performing this action in midair, perhaps after performing the motion version of Flowing Sirius. If the Slayer is in motion, it will rise and unleash power waves that affect surrounding areas.

Drive of Slayer

How does Slayer feel at the wheel? It’s like driving a finely tuned but temperamental sports car. Slayer has eight Photon Arts. Every one can be altered with movement. So it’s not easy to master the basics. Generally, the basic playstyle against solo enemies would see you using the stationary form of Shifting Spica, followed by the stationary form of Flowing Sirius, and repeating this (interspersed with normal attacks) until the Active Skill Unleashed Rage is available and you’ve made some progress on the Gunblade Focus Gauge. Follow these PAs using Unleashed Rage, which instantly increases your Focus Gauge to its maximum level, hopefully taking you to the max, then Gunblade Focus Overdrive. You can either keep going with the previous pattern or you could use Gunblade Focus Overdrive. Please try againTo unleash one powerful attack.

Combat with multiple enemies will be the same. The only difference is that you’d replace two of the PAs by the movement versions of Flowing Sirius or Reaping Regulus. Next, you’d continue to do this until Unleashed Rage has been obtained and the Gunblade Focus Gauge partially full. Continue the procedure as described above, but if you have enemies left to kill, start over.

These patterns will allow you to get familiar with Slayer, the Gunblade Focus Gauge and other forms. To activate the additional attack from the Class Skill Relentless Blade, you should use a normal attack during a PA once you feel comfortable. You can also use the Gunblade Weapon Action to dodging and guarding, then you can either use a normal or Weapon Action again to launch a counterattack using your Class Skill Blade Counter. A normal attack counter is a short shot that can be repeated to create a series of counterattacks. While the Weapon Action counter allows for more complex attacks, you have the option of using it in a second time. Slayer has many nuances. Players will enjoy learning how they can be used in different situations.
