Swery And Suda51 Team Up For 2.5D Action Game Hotel Barcelona, Out Next Year

Hotel Barcelona is being developed by White Owls Inc., a studio led by Swery, and Suda51, the studio responsible for the No More Heroes Series. Revealed during Xbox’s 2023 Tokyo Game Show broadcast, the team describes Hotel Barcelona as a “2.5D slasher film parodic action” game, and it’s out next year. 

The Hotel Barcelona is where serial killers are gathered from around the United States. They will be doing serial killer activities, I suppose. You must beat them all to get out of Hotel Barcelona. The game is due to be released in 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam.

In an Xbox Wire blog post, Swery says the idea was born during a Suda51-hosted event called “Travis Monday Nitro 2” in Shibuya, Tokyo, in October 2019. Hotel Barcelona was the name of the game they decided to create together. The two came up with the game plan “in one go, over dinner in Canada,” later that year. 

Swery describes Hotel Barcelona, a horror themed, side-scrolling, action game. In this game melee weapons are the primary weapon and subweapons include a Molotov Cocktail or a Shotgun. “You will go on missions equipped with each of these weapon types,” Swery tells Xbox. The weapons are obtained by looting the treasure chests dropped during missions.

He describes Hotel Barcelona as the place where “all the action takes place” and as an integrated leisure complex with facilities like a casino, camping ground, and more. In total, there are seven “smaller worlds” inside the hotel. In each of the seven “smaller worlds”, there is a boss serial killer to be defeated. Swery points out that these serial killer bosses do not represent a single historical figure, but rather “represent a particular subgenre in horror movies.” There are bosses who have been inspired by zombie horrors and summer camp b movies. 

There’s an interesting mechanic called the Slasher Phantom at play in Hotel Barcelona, too. 

“Simply put, the player’s past character will move as it did in the last run automatically, while still retaining all hitboxes,” Swery says. It’s similar to racing games with the Ghost feature, except that it uses hit detection. You will have the feeling of fighting your former self. Slasher Phantoms are a powerful tool that can help in any level.

“[Each]In each of the 7 worlds, there are several sections to be completed. Finally, the boss will appear in the last section. After clearing an area you have the option to choose from a variety of power-ups that can restore health or boost your attack. If you are hit, and sent back to where you started, it may be appealing to take a new route, for example, to boost your attack. Slasher Phantoms are reset when you select a new route. 

In 2024, Hotel Barcelona will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
