Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (2006) seemed to conclude the main storyline of the Mortal Kombat franchise. The 2011 entry continued the gruesome tale. The saga was moved forward with a reset of the timeline. It served as a “soft reboot” that took Mortal Kombat to its 2D roots, and brought back the classic roster. MK 9’s cinematic mode, which is still used today in fighting games and the whole series, was an epiphany. It established the model for storytelling fighting campaigns. MK9 is also the beginning of Mortal Kombat 1’s modern trilogy. You can find out more about MK9’s development in this article on how the MK9 reboot saved the Mortal Kombat franchise.
