Super Mario Bros. Wonder And Sonic Superstars Devs Talk About Releasing Their Games The Same Week
Sonic Superstars and Super Mario Bros. Wonder share many similarities. The 2D gameplay in both games is very close to what the creators intended. The games both feature competitive and co-operative multiplayer. Both deliver modernized visuals. They both offer new abilities and gameplay concepts that go beyond the original vision of the franchise. The release dates of these games are perhaps what is most surprising.
Sonic the Hedgehog briefly challenged Mario to the top of the platforming charts in the 1990s. Next week, it may become clear that the fates of the two series are intertwined. Sonic Superstars is coming to all consoles, including Switch, on October 17. This will only be a couple of days before Super Mario Bros. Wonder arrives exclusively on Switch.
Takashi Tezuka, the producer of Super Mario Bros. Wonder says: “I find it an interesting coincidence.” We’ve created 2D action video games for many years and, naturally, we want to see as many people as possible enjoy them. “We’re excited to see as many players as possible enjoy these 2D side scrolling games, Mario or otherwise.”
Sonic Team creative officer Takashi Iizuka, who serves as producer for Sonic Superstars, shares a similar sentiment. It’s been some time since Mario and Sonic launched a new 2D game. But I find it a little fateful that both games are being released in the same month,” says Takashi. Mario and Sonic have their own unique fun features. You should play them both this year, and you’ll see the differences.
Sonic Mania is the franchise’s last 2D title, released in 2017 after six years. Prior to that, however, the last all-new 2D Sonic platformer on consoles was Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, which arrived 11 years ago in 2012.
Our hands-on experience with both games has been impressive. Although they share many similarities, both games have their own distinct gameplay and visual styles, as well as the fundamental elements that helped shape each franchise for the last 30 to 40 years. Fans of 2D platforms are in for a thrilling stretch with this combination of two promising 2D games.
