Super Mario Bros. Movie revives the Super Mario Bros. Super Show rap
You thought you knew what? Super Mario Bros. MovieYou should reconsider if you think that leaving any Mario reference out of pop culture would be a mistake. A new ad for Nintendo and Illumination’s animated adaptation of the bros. confirms that anything and everything Mario-adjacent can be mined for jokes, including the rap — “The Mario Rap” — from 1989’s Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
Super Mario Bros. Movie’s resurrection of “The Mario Rap” comes in the form of what appears to be an in-film commercial for the Super Mario Bros. plumbing service, presented as a local TV spot. Mario and Luigi help a lady in trouble whose sink overflows and demonstrate the coverage of their services: Brooklyn as well as Queens.
Look closely at the map and you’ll see a few additional references, including local landmarks like:
- Punch Out is a pun on…!
- Link Street, a bit of The Legend of Zelda here
- Hanfuda Ave.sic) and 1889th St., references to Nintendo’s original business of manufacturing hanafuda cards and 1889, the year Nintendo was founded
- Ecto Hill and Ghost City, possibly the location of Luigi’s haunted mansion in the film
- Mushroom Planet is the home planet of Mushroom People from the desert planet Mushroom Planet Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode “Star Koopa”
End of the spot is a website called SMBplumbing.com that clearly conveys Super Mario Bros. You can also find Plumbing in your area and a number (929-55MARIO), that allows you to listen to Charlie Day play Luigi. It can be texted!
