Strange World’s Magic: The Gathering-like card game is fully playable
The world of Disney’s Strange World is, well, strange. There’s the wacky underground realm, full of bloblike creatures swathed in warm colors, but even the “normal” land of Avalonia is different from our own. Director Qui Nguyen and Don Hall set out to create a world without technology in Avalonia. The result is retro-futuristic, solarpunk setting with people having personal airships, but no cell phones. Avalonia has one advantage. DoesShare your knowledge with the world. Teenagers are still avid gamers, and that includes Ethan Clade (Jaboukie Young-White), the son of farmer-turned-reluctant-explorer Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal).
“We wanted Ethan to be a gamer because our kids are gamers,” laughs Hall. “Every kid, every teenager right now is a gamer.”

However, without consoles and computers, film-makers would be lost. Strange World had to rely on a different source of inspiration for Ethan’s gamer interest: tabletop gaming. You can enter Primal OutpostEthan loves to play a card game called ‘The Collectible Card Game,’ which he and his friends love. In Primal OutpostThe players have to collaborate in order to create a settlement, learning how to co-exist with the natural environment. We don’t really learn the specific mechanics of Primal Outpost Within the movie, Hall assures us, however that everything is complete.
“There are actual rules. And there are more cards than what we show,” he explains.
“It’s playable!” chimes in Nguyen. “It was obviously based a bit on Catan The Gathering: Magic and the Gathering, like those elements came hand in hand.”
The general plot ofPrimal Outpost — i.e., living with the wilderness instead of conquering it — sounds familiar, that was 100% intentional. Ethan, his dad (Dennis Quaid), and his grandfather, Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid), play the game together. Two older men, both of whom are not as interested in understanding the environment but attacking and protecting their strongestholds from them, seem more concerned with the latter. Ethan is groaning, trying to convince them that the point was being made.
“The rules of the game [were] actually secretly the theme of the whole film,” says Nguyen. “It was a nice trick to have Ethan be able to say, Living harmoniously with the natural world around you is, in fact, what all this thing is about.”
