Starfield Was The Best-Selling Game In The US Last Month, PS5 Remained Top Console
Video game analyst group Circana has released its September 2023 U.S. video game market highlights and in it, the company reveals that developer Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield was the best-selling game last month, which is the month it launched. Starfield has already become the 7th best-selling video game in the US after only six weeks. Hogwarts legacy, released in February, remains at the top of the list.
Starfield hit Xbox and PC on September 6 and while its Xbox Game Pass release surely helped it become the biggest launch ever for a Bethesda game with more than 6 million players, Circana’s data tracks dollar sales. Starfield, then, was the most popular game in September even though Xbox Game Pass wasn’t available. Circana Executive Director Mat Piscatella tweets that Starfield was “the best-selling title for the month on both Xbox One and PC.” PC is the leading platform.
Circana has also included other popular September games, such as Mortal Kombat 1 and EA Sports FC24. Payday 3 NBA 2K24 is another big hit.

Starfield, the top-selling game on Xbox, PC and PlayStation, was ranked first by Piscatella. Mortal Kombat 1 ranked second. Mortal Kombat 1 placed third on Switch despite its disastrous launch on the console.
Circana reports that U.S. expenditures on video games content, accessories, and hardware grew 10 percent compared with a year earlier, to $4.5 Billion. Piscatella states that growth in content, hardware and accessories has offset a 8% drop in the amount spent on hardware. The U.S. spend on videogame products has increased by 2% to date, reaching $39.4 billion. He notes that digital premium download expenditures on consoles and computers accounted for the bulk of September 2023’s gains.
Despite Starfield’s obvious September success, PlayStation 5 remained as the top-selling platform for both dollar and unit sales. Xbox Series X/S ranked in second place across all measures. Piscatella reports that the PS5 is also leading 2023 in hardware sales both by units and dollar, while year-to date hardware expenditures are up 10% over this time last.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PS5 DualSense was the most popular accessory in September. Accessories sales increased 11% from the previous month to $197 million.
