Star Ocean: The Divine Forge is coming to PlayStation next year

Star Ocean is getting a new title called Star Ocean The Divine Forge. The trailer shown at Wednesday’s Sony State of Play event depicted a spaceship struggling with some sort of crisis. It explodes when the crew can’t solve the problem. It’s a dramatic start to the trailer, but then we see open world gameplay with lush environments and monsters.

It looks like the setting is a mix of spaceship science-fiction and fantasy worlds. There’s also a battle system where crew members fight off dangerous monsters. Two protagonists will be featured in the game: one representing an advanced civilization and another representing an underdeveloped planet. You can pick one of them, each with their own story and allies.

Picking characters — both the protagonist you choose to play, and their supporting party —seems important to the open-world battle systems. Luckily, it’s easy to get around the game’s world thanks to jetpack technology, which looks a little like the initial pitch for Anthem

The Divine ForceSquare Enix and Tri-Ace developed the game. It will be available on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 by 2022.
