Square Enix Reveals Minimalist RPG Dungeon Encounters

Square Enix will release a brand new RPG in the next two weeks by collaborating with Hiroyuki Ito, the creator of Active Time Battle (ATB), from Final Fantasy. Hiroyuki Ito, who is also known for ATB, directs Final Fantasy XII the Zodiac Age. This minimalist dungeon crawler is called Dungeon Encounters.

Dungeon Encounters tasks players to explore grid-based labyrinths where, along the way, you’ll find allies, fight monsters, and earn abilities. This is a large part of Dungeon Encounters. You earn ability points for each square you move. Abilities can strategically shift enemy or player placements in the dungeon to dodge a conflict or travel to a hard-to-reach segment of the gameboard.

The Active Time Battle System is the main weapon of combat. Adventuring in the mazes, you’ll come across a variety of characters to add to your party. You can see a lot of friends who enjoy grid spelunking in the trailer. These party members aren’t exclusive to humanoid adventurers but also include a sword-wielding dog, a panther, and my favorite so far, a sizeable Totoro-like character named Sir Cat.

We don’t have to wait long to delve deep down into Dungeon Encounters. It’s releasing on PlayStation 4, Switch, and Steam on October 14.

It is interesting to see RPG systems explored in minimal visual space. Voice of Cards The Isle Dragon Roars has been announced. It is a similar game that relies more on cards than sprites, 3D models or 3D models. I’m all for it as long as the systems to play with are fun.
