Square Enix announces Nier: Automata anime series

Nier: AutomataYokotaro’s 2017 hit action-RPG, titled Yoko, has been adapted into anime by Square Enix.

Announced Wednesday by Square Enix during the game’s fifth anniversary livestream, the animated television series will adapt the story of 2B, 9S, and A2; three combat androids in the year 11945 AD pitted in an unrelenting war against extraterrestrial machines for the fate of humanity and whose lives are irrevocably transformed through the discovery of a terrible secret.

An announcement video was shown with key art that featured the 2B, a Katana wielding robot assistant and Pod 042.

Although it’s not clear who will oversee the adaptation or how many episodes it will have, nor when it will premiere, Aniplex (the production company that produced anime like Fullmetal Alchemist, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaPlease see the following: The Promised NeverlandParticipates in the Project

Its balletic swordplay and bullet-hell-shooting are just a few of the many highlights. Nier: AutomataMuch like the 2010 version, it is well-known for its breaking fourth wall narrative structure and its multiple branching ends. It is not yet clear how the new anime will improve on the defining qualities of this original game. Perhaps the anime will take inspiration from director Yoko Taro’s penchant for mischief and devote an entire arc to reanimating the same events over and over again with minor (albeit consequential) differences, à la 2006’s Haruhi’s Melancholy?

Janine Hawkins 2017, our game review, is described Nier: Automata as “a game that’s more than willing to make players feel small, both physically conceptually,” and a game that “demands and rewards patience with its antics.”
