Spy Kids 5 trailer shows off brand new generation
New generation of Spy KidsThe first trailer of the movie is here and it’s ready to save our world. Spy Kids Armageddon.
Robert Rodriguez returns with the 5th installment of the Spy Kids series, focusing this time on a new family. The first movie, which came out in 2001, followed Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, respectively), a pair of siblings who discover that their parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) used to be spies — and then become spies themselves for two more movies. In 2011, Vega, Sabara and their Spy Kids name had become a bit outdated. It was a movie about their step-cousins, played by Rowan Blanchard & Mason Cook. Carmen & Juni were still in it. Jessica Alba, Joel McHale and others were in the film.
Spy Kids Armageddon, the newest movie, doesn’t seem like it’s going to lean as heavily on the Cortez legacy. Enough time has passed that handing off the title makes more sense than clinging to faces that today’s kids don’t have any nostalgia for.
Rodriguez has told Netflix he wants this movie to stand by itself, as an entry into the Canon, but without the cast. But he also said, “There [will] be Easter eggs.” The new movie does take place in the same universe, so expect nods and references galore.
Zachary Levi (the new adult cast) and Gina Rodriguez are both superspies. The kids of the parents accidentally aid an evil game designer, and they have to become secret agents to rescue their parents. Netflix releases the movie on 22 September.
