Spoiler-Free Tips To Know For Starting Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be released on the PS5 October 20th. If you read our glowing reviews, you already know that we’re excited to review it. You wouldn’t be blamed if, after years of waiting, you are a little out-of-shape with Insomniac’s fast-paced fighting system. And you would not be blamed if, like us, you need some advice to take advantage of all the features that the game offers. We’ve put together 16 pieces of information to get you back in the game (literally). Here are some tips and tricks for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that you can use on your PlayStation 5.

The Parrying Guide

Parrying is a powerful tool in the arsenal of wallcrawlers, but getting the timing just right can be difficult at first. Pay attention to the colour of the indicator for spider sense, and not the animation. You may think the strike is going to come sooner or later, depending on the animation. However, the ring over the head of the enemy will not let you go. You can press the L1 key when it changes color. You can adjust the color of the text in the accessibility options if you have trouble seeing it.

Be patient to improve your parries. It’s a little counter-intuitive since most of the Spider-Men’s moveset has you moving as quickly as possible to avoid attacks and thwip across the arena, but parries don’t cancel out your attacks – if you press the punch button and quickly try to parry mid-attack, the parry won’t come out until after the attack is completed, leaving you vulnerable to attacks. It’s doubly important to remember this when fighting bosses. You can avoid damage by waiting your turn, parrying at the appropriate time.

What is Fast Travel?

It’s true that you may have watched some clips where Spider-Man 2 uses the PS5 to travel lightning-quickly, but this is not a feature available right away. You can only access it after you have completed a number of missions in an area. This could include collecting items, taking photos or completing side-missions. Your progress can be tracked by the district meter located on your map.
When you’ve unlocked this ability, just place your cursor on the map and hold the triangle to send Spider-Man directly to the point you specify.

Take advantage of wind tunnels, updrafts and other techniques

Web Wings offer some of the fastest traveling in the entire series. If you’re using updrafts and wind tunnels when you see them, you’ll be surprised by how quickly you’re able to rocket across the city – make use of them whenever you can.

Don’t Forget To Disarm Enemies

Web Whip can be unlocked very early and is an incredibly helpful ability. Past games had you unlock different skills to disarm different types of weapons, but this game has no such requirement – the Web Whip ability allows you to grab guns, melee weapons, shields, and rocket launchers.

This is what each token does

Most unlockables require tokens. When you run out of tokens, you can press the button on the unlockable menu to get a guide showing you where the side missions are. The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man application or map will show you how many tokens are available and what XP is awarded. There are a few tokens that have different functions, but it’s hard to tell what they do. So here is a short guide.

  • Tech Parts are grey and the most prevalent currency. You’ll get them in a certain amount from most missions and sidequests. By late game you may have too many to use. You can only collect them by completing random generated crimes. So if you are low on money, stop some drug deals. Every upgrade in the game requires a certain amount.

  • By completing the Photo Ops, Marko’s Memories and Friendly Neighbour Spider-Man App requests, you can unlock Blue City Tokens. They’re easier to collect than the other two currencies but still require some effort.

  • The most important resources are Rare Tech Parts, (yellow), and Hero Tokens, (red). These are largely unlocked through missions in later levels of the game. To avoid spoilers we will not list them, but you should keep track to see how many and what suits and gadgets you still need. Speaking of which…

Do not buy suits immediately

Insomniac Spider-Man wouldn’t exist without an abundance of suits. However, they are a bit different this time. In the past, unlocked suits also gave you access to suit pieces that were used for enhancing your character. Upgrades and suits in Spider-Man 2 are separate but often share the same resources. It’s worthwhile to hold off on buying suits until the end of the game, especially. It will require a high amount of Hero Tokens, Rare Tech Parts and other currency to unlock all the suit and gadget upgrade options.

Take advantage of your gadgets

It’s so easy to overlook some of the most important elements of the series when there are so many combat options. The gadgets in the game are an excellent example. In previous games you would have a limited number of items that were replenished during battle, now they are automatically recharged over time. Don’t be afraid to use them – you’ll be surprised by how quickly they come back.

Web Grabbers are Your Best Friend

The Web Grabber is one of the most useful gadgets. It tethers a web to an enemy group in a certain area, and then pulls the enemies together. The Web Grabber is an excellent opener to Miles’ Venom Powers, or Peter’s Spider-Arm ability since it gathers the enemies into a group that can be attacked with area attacks.

Use shortcuts to the D-Pad

Spider-Man 2, a game with a great deal of accessibility features, is available to all players, no matter if they have disabilities or not. These are best illustrated by the shortcuts for the dpad. To make things easier, at the bottom of your settings menu you can add certain commands to the dpad. For example, I set up the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man application to be on one side of the d-pad and the Photo Gadget at the other so that I do not have to constantly swipe the touchpad. It can be used to quickly switch between gadgets and abilities or access the photo mode. You can even adjust game settings such as contrast or speed.

A Corner Tether Can Be Extremely Helpful

Do you have trouble with tight turns? Corner Tether was one of my favorite options on the skill tree, and I hope to see this feature return in future releases. The shared tree has it, just down in middle. It is available early on, and you can get to it easily. Hold Circle and turn Spider-Man in that direction.

Use tricks to gain XP

Spider-Man will gain XP by holding Square in mid-air while pointing his left stick in the direction he wants. Although it’s not as good as completing a quest, you can still gain a few levels if you are close to the limit.

It is possible to heal yourself with web shooters

They can be used to slow down and immobilize enemies, but also as a defensive weapon. Web Shooters can generate focus at the base level and be upgraded for even greater amounts. Focus bars let you heal yourself. It might make sense to go for some distance and fire off several webs before topping off the focus bar.

The Web Shooters will eventually have the ability to physically heal your character on every attack, which makes this strategy more powerful. When you are stuck fighting a tough boss, the webs will be your greatest friend.

It’s impossible to complete EMF missions until you beat the game

After a few minutes of playing, you will be able do EMF Missions, which are typically cute, little games about nature and science. You can unlock them early, but you won’t be able to complete their quests until you’ve completed the main game.

Spider-Bots: Grab Them When You Spot Them

Spider-Bots, one of the mysterious collectibles within the game can be seen in the city by their spherical multicolored pulses. New York has a lot of things to see and collect. It’s easy to overlook them, but they are worth grabbing. The only thing about these collectibles is that they don’t show up in the map. This can make it difficult to find them.

Flame Quests is Worth Your time

As you finish the main quest, four Peter-specific quests become available. There’s no reason to give these quests more priority than others. However, it is important to complete them all before putting the game away. This ending has some intriguing implications which will be explored in the sequel or DLC.

Stay After the Credits

You’ll know by now that if you are a Marvel movie fan (or just familiar) from the last 15 years you should stay after the credits. It is a standard superhero fan behavior. Spider-Man 2 has some post-credits sequences that feature new plot details. These are likely to appear in the sequel or DLC.
