Following the dramatic conclusion of 2019’s Spider-Man Far From Home, Spider-Man has no way homePeter Parker (Tom Holland), struggling with the implications of being exposed to the public as Spider-Man’s secret identity. Peter, who is Tom Holland, struggles with the consequences of being revealed to the world as Spider-Man. He accidentally destroys the multiverse by bringing in adversaries from different dimensions. Peter faces a new moral challenge and must find allies in order to rescue the world. Our review shows that

A story such as this is dangerous because it’s easy to let go of spectacle and allow the movie to be carried along by the superficial thrill of breaking down franchise lines. You can’t go home! doesn’t really dodge this problem — you could also call it Spider-Man fan service ahoy! — but screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers make a valiant effort to give the movie a beating heart by giving Peter a more humanistic goal. When Peter learns that these invading villains were plucked from their universes before fatal battles with their respective Spider-Mans, he’s unwilling to send them back to their deaths. Instead, he tries to find a way to “cure” them of their supervillain transformations, and send them back with second chances at good lives.

Deep Water

Ana de Armas in Deep Water

Adrian LyneFatal Attraction, Proposal for IndecentAfter nearly 20 years, he finally makes his much-anticipated return. Deep Water; an erotic psychological thriller based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1957 novel of the same name. Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck star as Vic Van Allen and Melinda Van Allen in this movie. Their loveless marriage turns into an inexplicable game of murder and infidelity that is deadly for all who are unfortunate enough to be in their path. Our review

Affleck’s performance is brilliantly modulated. He inhabits Vic almost entirely with an inertness that is only amplified by his size. It can appear that he is parodying the Sad Affleck movie by looming in the frame and even looking down on his stubble. He also has moments that show a terrifying inch of steel. A previous boyfriend of Melinda’s disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and early in the film, Vic scares off her latest beau by claiming to have killed him. Affleck’s suppressed, hyper-controlled rage makes it all too believable. Vic remains unreadable until and beyond the party at the pool that ends the film.

Black Crab

What to Watch:Netflix streaming available

Noomi Rapace holding a rifle in Black Crab.

Noomi RapacePrometheus, The Dragon Tattoo Girl(Stars in Swedish Action-Thriller Black CrabCaroline Edh is one of six soldiers that were part of a dangerous covert mission to invade enemy territory. The group trekked through the treacherous frozen surfaces of an archipelago. As they risk their lives to deliver a mysterious package said to have the power to end the war for good, Caroline remains focused on her own personal mission — to recover her lost daughter who was abducted by the enemy several years ago and return her home. Our review.

Intentionally, the geopolitics surrounding this particular situation is kept under wraps. In an opening flashback, a car radio mentions rioting, “both sides” blaming each other, and the start of a civil war. It seems that Sweden is the setting. The enemy is only ever referred to as “the enemy.” To the extent viewers can tell, it feels more like a society turned on itself than a clash of cultures or nations, but no ideological rift is ever explained. Because the society is in danger of complete collapse, it’s clear that the cause must be grave.

This lack of details is likely to emphasize the meaninglessness of the conflict or keep viewers from becoming too involved in personal opinions on the subject. It’s really just a lack of imagination. The film feels meaningless. A bleak disquisition about war, with a cool look, is all it.

Windfall

What to Watch:Netflix streaming available

(L-R) LILY COLLINS as WIFE, JESSE PLEMONS as CEO and JASON SEGEL as NOBODY in WINDFALL.

Jesse Plemons (Dog Power) and Lily Collins (Extremely Wicked and Shockingly Evil. VileHitchcockian thriller starring a) Windfall The couple is a billionaire tech entrepreneur and his wife. They arrive at their home in search of a quick getaway but are robbed instead. The couple is taken by Jason Segel, their would-be robber. They are made to comply with his demands while they look for escape routes to their safety. At least, that’s what the trailer seems to imply. Something tells me there’s more to the relationship between these three characters. We’ll just have to watch the movie and find out!

Master

What to Watch: Amazon Prime Video available to stream

Regina Hall as Gail Bishop in Master (2022).

Regina HallScary MovieZoe Renee and ),Jinn) star in writer-director Mariama Diallo’s feature debut MasterGail Bishop, a New England University professor, and Jasmine Moore (a freshly admitted freshman). While navigating the unique perils of their experiences as Black women in a predominantly white college campus, both women find themselves haunted by terrifying manifestations of the school’s Salem-era past following anonymous racist attacks made against them. This trailer gives off an awfully heavy vibe. Move Out vibe and it’s already garnered rave reviews from critics in the wake of its premiere at this year’s Sundance film festival. Our review.

Within the film’s surprisingly complex setup, the outright horror of the witch haunting is the bluntest instrument. It’s used to ratchet up the sense of danger as Jasmine burrows deeper into hostile territory, is ostracized by her classmates, and researches the earlier student death in her room. Honestly, the haunting doesn’t always mesh with the real social horrors she faces. But it does allow Hornsby to frame some strikingly creepy shots, breaking up her austere, autumnal compositions with walls of red and slashes of black, embedded in Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe’s ominous, droning score. Hornsby, Diallo, and others create layers and metaphorical images. They are subtler, but still lingering like the shadows of janitors mopping up the floors behind Jasmine and Gail as they discuss Liv’s complaint. These Black women are still cleaning up the mess, generations after the maid whose memory haunts Gail’s house.

Hell Hath No Fury

What to Watch: Hulu is available to stream

Nina Bergman as Marie in Hell Hath No Fury.

Image by Well Go USA Entertainment

Jesse V. Johnson, one of today’s most respected filmmakers in direct-to-video actions is his latest film Hell Hath No FuryHis prolific career was marked by this achievement. Marie DuJardin, a Frenchwoman (Nina Bergman), has been labeled a traitor because of her affair with Daniel Bernhardt (Nazi officer). As World War II comes to a close and Marie’s place in the future French society is uncertain, she is rescued by a group of American soldiers on one condition: she must reveal the location of a secret stash of Nazi gold and lead the group there.

This thriller is gripping and tense, almost set entirely in a cemetery, with an eerie air of uncertainty that throws everything you believe you know. This story has no heroes, but only survivors. According to our review

Bergman, along with the JVJ cast members, is fantastic in their nuanced roles, where the real motivations of each actor are not always clear. Daniel Bernhardt (Atomic Blonde, Nobody) brings an uncanny combination of menace and charm in one of the richest roles he’s had the opportunity to play, as the villainous Nazi officer Von Bruckner. Louis Mandylor, a JVJ veteran, and Dominique Vandenberg are excellent additions to the ensemble.

Bad luck Banging and Loony Porn

A censored intertitle from Radu Jude’s Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn.

Magnolia Pictures

Radu Jude’s Romanian comedy-drama Bad luck Banging and Loony PornIts raunchy humor, incisive themes and first screening at Berlin International Film Festival made it a big hit. Emi (Katia Passcariu) plays a teacher at school who is put in danger by the leak of her personal sex tape. As calls for her resignation begin to furiously pour in, Emi refuses to stand down — instead choosing to defend herself in a world that would seek to punish her for her sexuality.

It’s an intriguing premise, although one that makes the film a bit difficult to distribute via streaming given the film’s graphic depiction of said sex tape in its opening minutes. Jude found an easy way to get around this problem with garish Windows MovieMaker-style subtitles. These intertitles mock the hypocrisy that one can show violent images, but not the consensual act of physical intimacy between two people.

Under the guidance of their psychiatrist, the pair experiment with a new form of unconventional therapy for both themselves and their fellow patients — turning the treatment center into a restaurant that utilizes the skill sets of everyone in the facility. There’s drama, laughter, heartbreak, and catharsis all on display in the film’s brief trailer; more than enough to entice anyone interested in the film’s depiction of mental health to give it a watch.
