Sony Announces New Slim PlayStation 5 Models With Removable Disc Drives
Nearly three years after the initial launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony has revealed a slimmer redesign. Sony will update both the digital and disc models, though they are no longer as separate as in the past. You will be able purchase the drive separately to convert a digital PS5 to disc compatibility. Both models will be released in November and eventually will replace the PS5 model.
According to a blog entry on the PlayStation website, “The PS5’s volume and weight have been decreased by over 30% and 18% respectively compared with the older models.” There is also a mention that there are new textures on the cover, but it’s not immediately obvious from the photos. The announcement says that there are four different cover panels, with the upper portion having a shiny look and the lower part matte. It raises questions regarding the compatibility between the current console shells Sony offers that let you change the look and feel of your console. However, this issue is not discussed in the announcement.
If you do buy a newer digital version and decide to upgrade it to a disc version, the drive will cost you $79.99 in the US, €119.99 in Europe, £99.99 in the UK, and ¥11,980 in Japan. A digital console with a disk drive costs a bit more than purchasing a standard disc drive. A new horizontal stand is included with the console to allow it to be positioned on its side. The vertical stand, which costs $29.99 USD | 29.99 EURO | 24.99 GBP | 3,980 JPY. Watch the video below to see how it all comes together.
