Sonic Frontiers sends the hedgehog on a new 3D adventure

At the Game Awards, Sonic Team announced the title of its next Sonic the Hedgehog game at the Game Awards. It will be called “Next game”. Sonic Frontiers and it’s scheduled to be released at some point during the 2022 holiday season.

The game is being developed by Sega’s Sonic Team Japan and is being led by producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto. According to developers: Sonic Frontiers is an “open-zone-inspired experience” and will feature an original storyline from Sonic BoomIan Flynn is the writer

“Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike,” Takashi Iizuka, creative officer at Sonic Team USA said in a release.

The story will follow Sonic and friends after Dr. Eggman loses control of an “ancient technology.” Here’s the full description from the release:

Sonic Frontiers, Sonic’s long-time nemesis Dr. Eggman discovers an ancient technology on the Starfall Islands and installs his AI program SAGE to hack in and take over. Unintended consequences are immediately brought to his attention. But, there is much more to this technology that he realises. Sonic has to race against the clock in order to find the truth and save his friends.

Sega first announced Sonic Frontiers in May as part of the Sonic Central livestream to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary. The developers didn’t announce the title then, but they did tease the game with a cinematic trailer showing the blue hedgehog running through a forest. They also revealed that the title would be available on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 as well as the PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.

More recent 3D Sonic titles include 2017’s Sonic Forces, 2013’s Sonic Lost World, and 2011’s Sonic Generations. Sega released an updated version of Wii 2010 in fall Sonic Colors. Sonic has also acquired a couple of spinoffs from sports in 2019, called Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Team Sonic Racing.
