Sonic Frontiers: 10 Top Tips To Help You Build Momentum In Sonic's Newest Adventure

If you are playing on a PlayStation 5/X/S, first things first. You can choose to prioritize resolution and frame rate. You can do this by pressing the Start button and selecting “graphics” at the bottom. The default setting for the game is 4K Mode. However, once I realized that there was an option to speed up frame rates, it ran much faster and appeared much more natural in motion. Although everyone will have their own preference as to which setting is most important, frame rate prioritization is highly recommended for games such as this one, in which speed is key. 

You can flip the switch while you’re switching to performance mode in the options menu. This will turn off Sonic’s limited movement. While this tip isn’t as crucial as others on the list, it was something I liked. Sonic Frontiers has a few moments where Sonic makes comments to himself about the environment. If restrict movement is on, he will come to a dead stop immediately when the camera swings out to focus on what he’s talking about. This can be turned off so you are able to move about. Granted, you’ll probably want to slow down a bit since you won’t have the same camera angle that you’re used to, but I found that turning off restricted movement was the way to go to keep the immersion levels up.

You can explore a lot of places once you’ve landed on Kronos Island. While Cyber Space stages and Guardian miniboss battles are enticing, I recommend seeking out the in-world puzzles and challenges that defog your map. You can find some of them easily, but you should open your map to see the red icons. Once you’ve exited your map, make a waypoint. This will show up as an orange beam.

Every time you finish a challenge you get an extra piece of the map with icons. The best boost is when you finish the entire map. The achievement/trophy will be given for each island. You also have the option to quickly travel to Cyber Space portals. This allows you to get to the end of the playthrough and tie up any loose ends.

It may seem obvious but I was surprised to discover that it is possible to return to previously visited islands almost at any moment. To access the island menu, click the top button on the map (triangle for PlayStation 2, Y on Xbox and X on Switch). You can select which island you want to visit, and it will also show you how many of the maps you have unlocked.

Sonic Frontiers provides many options to improve the hedgehog’s abilities. While you move through the skill tree, your skills points allow you to retrieve Koco lost in open zones. You have the option of upgrading speed or your ring capability by visiting an Elder Koco. Red Seeds of Power or Blue Seeds of Defense are available to Hermit Kocos on the islands. These can then be used to increase your defense and strength.

All these upgrades are worthwhile, but if you want to zero in on two areas, Strength and ring capacity are my recommendations. My number one weapon with which to fight is Strength. It makes boss and enemy encounters much easier and faster. My first major strength upgrade was a surprise to me. I found it surprising how quickly I beat my opponents. Although speed can be helpful for navigation and Guardian encounters with chase mechanics, it is not as important as ring capacity upgrades. These are essential to win Titan boss battles. 

As you explore each island, you’ll uncover one portal that, instead of taking you to a traditional speed-based stage, leads you to a familiar face within Cyber Space. Although Big the Cat may appear slow and inefficient at first glance, you will quickly realize the benefits Big has to offer by using his fishing portals. While filling out the Fishopedia form is great, the true reward lies in the trading of the tokens Big offers for every catch. 

Those tokens are as valuable as anything in the game – seriously! These tokens can be used for all the game’s upgrade collectibles: Seeds of Power, Seeds of Defense and Lost Koco. They also allow you to acquire side-character Memory Tokens, Chaos Emerald Vault Keys or Portal Keys. There are coins available that will allow you to fish in the open areas (the purple ones), and you can stack them up every night when there is a meteor shower. The showers bring back the enemy on the island. However, if you collect the meteorite pieces you can spin the fishing coin slot.

Sonic can dodge and counter attacks by simultaneously pressing both the shoulder buttons. It sounds very simple but it is crucial that you master the technique before taking on Titan. Sonic Frontiers offers plenty of opportunities to practice combos and abilities, but the best way to get your parry timing down is to seek out a Guardian that goes on the offensive (like Kronos Island’s Ninjas) and use them as a practice dummy.

Cyloop is Sonic’s first ability. It has a wide range of utility. You can also use it to damage, stun and break off enemy armor, but the best way to use it is for exploring the open spaces. Try drawing Cyloops around any puzzles in the world. There’s a good chance that you will activate the object or interact with it in beneficial ways. 

You can also use this method if there is an anomaly on the ground. Cyloop can be used if you are unsure. Cyloop is the best way to avoid disaster. Our next tip is…

Every island has a boss fight against a titan, a massive robot. Although the Titan battles have different mechanics and tactics, there is one thing that unites them all: Super Sonic takes them on. But, in order to do this, you must retrieve the final Chaos Emerald. This Emerald is found often at the top of Titans. You can then start encounter as regular Sonic. This can be a blessing, though.

Cyloop is a way to get around while being grounded, even if you’re the blue version. The Elder Kocos can be used to increase your ring capacities. Super Sonic, while invincible and slow depletes rings slowly, is essentially able to extend your time limit in order complete the boss fight. What good is having a larger wallet when you don’t actually have the money? Cyloop is your friend. Cyloop can help you run circles around and create enough rings to reach the maximum number of rings before climbing up to the final Chaos Emerald. This will allow you to take longer to fight the Titan bosses. Their attacks and projectile spam can delay your attack, so this is a great way to save time.

While I nearly always used the autosave to save my game, one Titan caused me some trouble. I felt like I needed to get out of it and level Sonic again. But I couldn’t. My autosave forced me to enter the fight, so I was forced to defeat the boss using a smaller ring and lower damage output. Although it can sometimes be hard to tell when the game will place you in a Titan fight, if six Chaos Emeralds are available and you’re on your way towards a story mission you may want to save another one just in case.

Although the Titan battles don’t seem to be particularly difficult, they are time-consuming. If you lose a couple of times trying to take down this monstrous boss, it’s normal to desire to try something else. A manual save can take as little as 20 seconds. This is a small price to pay for the potential rewards.
