Shazam! Fury of the Gods box office disappoints ahead of DC reboot

Shazam! Fury of GodsThe film has been released in theatres and was met with a loud thud at box office.

Shazam! 2Its opening weekend earned $30 million. It was the lowest opening weekend for any DC theatrical exclusive film. It is only Wonder Woman 1984 Suicide SquadEven worse: both films premiered simultaneously on HBO Max, and in theaters at the same time during the peak of COVID-19.

Shazam! 2 brings the old DC cinematic universe one step closer to ending, with James Gunn’s version of the DCU set to take over in 2025. But there are still three DC movies that can be released in 2018 with different degrees of connection to future DC universe. The FlashThe new universe will be released on June 23rd. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom which will release on Dec. 25, doesn’t seem to have much connection at all. They are somewhere in the middle. Blue Beetle, which is set for release on Aug. 18, though we don’t know how it officially fits into any version of the DC universe so far.

A movie-like experience is available on the other. Joker: Folie á DeuxThe film is part of a separate universe. It will feature Lady Gaga as well as Joaquin Phoenix.

DC has already set dates for its new universe version. Superman: Legacy, which is set to kick James Gunn’s DCU off on July 11, 2025, and The Batman — Part IIThe movie is due to be released on Oct. 3, 2025.
