SDCC News: Disney Plus adds R-rated Marvel movies Deadpool and Logan
Disney Plus is getting three R-rated Marvel movie superhero films. San Diego Comic-Con saw the announcement that Disney Plus will be bringing three R-rated Marvel superhero movies to life. Deadpool, Deadpool 2And Logan — three Marvel movies released by 20th Century Fox — will all be available to stream on Disney Plus in the U.S. starting July 22.
That’s a significant change in policy for Disney, which has generally limited its Disney Plus content stateside to PG-13 and TV-MA-rated fare. In March, Disney added new parental controls to Disney Plus that would permit R-rated and TV-MA content, which paved the way for Netflix’s Marvel shows, including the graphically violent Daredevil The PunisherTo stream content to the platform click here
Deadpool, Deadpool 2And LoganThese movies are clearly violent. There is no shortage of violence in those films. But Disney seems to be willing to relax its policy on only releasing all-age content. Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios stated that Deadpool 2 will feature a R-rated movie. BladeCould be.
Disney tested R-rated content in different territories for Disney Plus. The streaminger introduced 2001 Jet Li’s action movie Kiss of the DragonCanadian Disney Plus subscribers were notified earlier this year that other territories included R-rated content in a Disney Plus/Hulu combination.
In a news release, Disney encouraged subscribers to “revisit their parental controls settings to ensure a viewing experience most suitable for them and their family.”
Disney Plus subscribers who haven’t yet seen the R-rated side of Marvel are in for a treat, though. It’s great to see Ryan Reynolds star in Deadpool, with their comical and graphic violence complemented by a hilarious comedic twist. The original DeadpoolFrom 2016, Wade Wilson is an anti-heroese on a mission for revenge. Deadpool 2, released in 2018, draws further from Marvel’s X-Men universe, bringing in allies like Domino (Zazie Beetz) and adversaries like Cable (Josh Brolin).
Logan2017’s release, titled, was decidedly less… entertaining. In James Mangold’s adaptation of Marvel Comics’ Logan Old ManWolverine (Hugh Jackman), cares both for an ailing Professor X as well as a young, mysterious mutant. It’s a fitting, but grueling sendoff for Jackman’s version of the character.
