Sci-Fi & Horror Collide with Arthurian Legend in The Hand of Merlin

No matter if you refer to Arthurian legend in a traditional way, such as the films and novels, or comical, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, there’s no doubt that you’ve been exposed to the iconic tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in some form or another.

However, Arthur’s tale has been retold so many times over the years, which prompted developer Room-C Games to think about it differently. What could they do to honor the legends while adding a modern twist?

It is the result. The Hand of MerlinA tactical, roguelite role-playing game (RPG) that fuses elements of horror and sci-fi with Arthurian legend.

Our story begins in the years following Arthur’s death. The Cataclysm, an apocalyptic event that threatens the end of the multiverse is threatening. Each world is being under attack by evil abominations bent on destroying every sun.

Merlin has been imprisoned for many years and is no longer able to direct his actions. However, he still retains some influence in the mortal realm, looking for people who can succeed where Arthur did not. All the rest will be up to you. To save the multiverse, you must recruit Heroes to lead them on dangerous journeys to obtain the Grail.

It sounds simple, doesn’t it? That’s what I thought at first, too, but was then quickly and unceremoniously wiped out during my first few runs. These enemies are far more savage than any Knights Who Say “Ni!”

This is what made me appreciate the game. It can be difficult at times but it rewards those who make mistakes and adjust their strategies. If rushing the enemy leads to a brutal defeat in close combat, you’ll darnn sure try a ranged attack first next time!

Also, I find it very inspiring. The Hand of MerlinYou can choose from several difficulty levels to get you started. “Story” is a great place to start for folks new to tactical RPGs and want a more casual experience. Strategy veterans will find the Hard Mode ++ to be a challenging experience. Enjoy it!

Mode of Hardness
Only the most daring adventurers will be able to use this option. Complex resource management will present a greater challenge and more difficult enemies. You can earn Essence each time you run, which can be traded for Blessings/Cursses. These will add temporary benefits to your next run as well as burden.

Dynamic Leveling
You can use Renown to upgrade your Heroes. Choose from a random set of skills and attributes. Make sure you choose carefully! Choose skills that work together and keep your team balanced for success.

Equipment Upgrades
Look for towns that can help you improve your armor and arms, or find hermit craftsmen in the wilderness. Every day passes and the darkness continues to grow, so you’ll need every piece of equipment that gold can purchase.

The Relics
Items with magic power can be found everywhere, from a simple luck charm for a peasant to the famous sword used by Arthur. Some you will be able to purchase from merchants and collectors, but others will have to be earned through acts of heroism – or displays of wit.

Spells
Your foes will be afflicted by thunder and brimstone! To restore your strength and unlock new Spells, you should seek out Soulstones. You can jump to the next dimension even though your spirit is defeated.

Alternate Dimensions
History is transformed as you move from one dimension to another. The land is ruled by different kings that change the characters and the events. Every journey will be different and no world is ever the same. Even if you lose your heros, don’t despair. It is just the start of something new.

There are many worlds, as many as stars in the night sky. Each world has Camelot, and each one holds the Grail. There is one Merlin and his eternal duty is to protect the terror from above. Every world saved will be saved for all time; every world lost will go away forever.
