Resident Evil 4 VR Review – Breathing New Life Into A Familiar Feeling
In the matter of whether someone should play, I am in two minds. Resident Evil VR. If you’ve never touched the original RE4, then by no means should you jump into this version; everything that made (and makes, for that matter) it important would completely go over your head in VR. However, if you have played Resident Evil 4 – especially if you’ve completed it numerous times over the years – then RE4VR should be played at all costs.
RE4VR stands for Resident Evil 4 VR, just like its name. This is Resident Evil 4 in VR. There’s an immediate novelty to the game’s perspective shift – bringing it into first-person allows an intimate look at the game’s world third-person could never afford. Being effectively a remaster of a 16 -year-old game, RE4VR shows its age at times – mainly when up close to certain muddy textures and assets – but it doesn’t look bad by any means. Being a long-time player of the original, it was always a delight to have a 1:1 reproduction of RE4’s levels, characters, or monsters.
In most cases, VR specific changes are welcome. In VR, it’s fun to construct the huge attache bag where Leon Kennedy keeps all of his guns and equipment. You can feel as close to it as possible, even though you may be playing Tetris using guns. These guns are stunning, The iconic guns like the Red9 handguns and Striker shotguns were great to look at and I enjoyed having a lot of fun. The same applies to other items around the globe, such as money, keys and herbs. Every item can be taken apart and examined before being put in an inventory. I’m sure I looked like an idiot to all my neighbors constantly staring at my hands, but they didn’t know I was looking at a yellow herb up-close-and-personal for the first time – their loss.
The most important overhaul I saw in RE4VR was Combat, which is what made me swoon. It is well-known that the original transformed the standard third-person perspective camera view from fixed angles to the more modern, behind-the-back view. However, it had tanks controls that meant Leon couldn’t move in any direction but the one he was looking at. He couldn’t aim or shoot while moving. Although it was groundbreaking at the time, the gameplay is clearly mechanically dissonant. Leon is presented as some American Badass action hero. But once you have him under control, you will still be bumbling about like the old Resident Evil. RE4VR will completely abandon this model if it is switched to full motion instead of teleporting. It is a wonderful combination of mechanics and stories that I cannot recommend enough.
Moving freely around the combat arena changes how enemy engagements in RE4 work. Instead of trying to line up with enemies and do as much damage before they get me, I moved around freely and adapted my playstyle according to what was happening. I acted offensively rather than defensively. My first experience with RE4VR was fun. I loved shooting at enemies and felt like a virtual John Wick. RE4VR changed the way I play one of my favourite games. The experience felt new, thrilling, and completely unlike any RE4 game I’ve played in 16 years. It was the first time I felt like I wasn’t just doing the normal things. The iconic moments such as the El Gigante fights and the village encounter were memorable and more enjoyable than ever.
Moving RE4 into first-person also does a lot for its horror – though it’s still not the scariest thing you can play on the market. VR is full of enemies and there’s tension when they surround you, especially if you get overwhelmed. It’s also very intimidating to see the many large bosses towering over you. RE4VR was a constant reminder of how terrifying it can be to try and outmaneuver any threat that is closing in on you. This could sometimes lead to problems with tracking two-handed guns, as it would not register my inputs such as shooting a gun or aim down a scope. Although this problem was rare it did lead to some unfortunate deaths. I had not yet unlocked Striker which allowed me to shoot an automatic shotgun using one hand, just like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Terminator 2 – but cooler.
I played RE4 Front-to-Back three times in 2020. It is something I enjoy. For comfortIt’s so easy to load up, and I don’t even think about it. RE4VR changed my view of a game I’m familiar with. RE4VR can be a wonderful option for those who love RE4, are able to access Oculus Quest 2, or don’t mind the ethically-questionable requirement to create a Facebook page to use Oculus games. You can breathe new life into an old familiar feeling.
