Rear Window board game, based on the classic film, sounds amazing

Funko dives into the classic cinema scene with Game in the Rear WindowThe modern game of chess is based on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 classic film, which starred Jimmy Stewart. Final product, which supports up to 5 players, will arrive in the summer at $34.99.

This sounds terrible at first. This board game licensed from a film that was released just ten years after World War II ended? That’s not quite the right recipe to cater to modern tabletop tastes. But the game is being developed by Funko Games’ Prospero Hall studio, whose expertise with licensed material is well known.

We recently reviewed Prospero Hall’s Fast & Furious: Highway Heist It was excellent. Also, we saw the upcoming version. Jurassic World: Isla Nublar’s LegacyWe are excited to see the end result. So I have every confidence that they’ll treat the source material respectfully. How about the gameplay?

It sounds good, I think. Game in the Rear WindowFeels like you are listening to some riff MysteriumThis game uses secret information and nonverbal communication. The team on Polygon’s Overboard certainly enjoyed themselves, but Mysterium can be hit or miss depending on who’s sitting behind the screen. Prospero Hall will have to see if he can sing a similar idea.

Here’s the official description from Thursday’s news release:

Experience Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece Rear windowThis is a game of suspense and deduction. Pay attention to strange patterns and clues in apartments along the route. You will find parties, knifes, laughter, music, bickering and even a saw. There is also a trunk. Do you detect a murder? Is it the neighbor’s private, secret world that is putting frightening thoughts in your head?

Photographs show two screens: one is for Jimmy Stewart, the other is for the Director. To communicate understanding, both the directors and the players will have to use a limited number of tiles. Some are images, others contain words. Expect to know once the tabletop gaming convention circuit kicks off, and certainly by Gen Con — the country’s largest tabletop gaming convention — which takes place in August.
