Basculin was able to take around based on our testing. 260-300 recoil damage at minimum. To evolve yours, take your Basculin to an area with weaker Pokémon and make it use Wave CrashOr Double-EdgeYou will not be able to change the notification until you have it.

Recoil damage doesn’t have to occur in one battle. You can heal your Basculin whenever you feel like it.

Our method explained

It was surprising that the amounts it required before it could be evolved were different in each of three testing.

We had two Basculin, one male and one female. We didn’t use Strong or Agile Style moves. Wave Crash, Double-Edge, and Double-Edge both deal recoil harm.

The first Basculin sustained 267 injuries before it was discovered that we could create it. Second Basculin suffered 296 injuries. We got the evolution prompt after 302 damage to our third Basculin. The Basculin was affected by each attack, which did approximately 15-20 repulse damage.

We battled weak Pokémon, so our Basculin were able to one-hit each opponent using its recoil-causing move. Basculin #1 required 10 battles in order to evolve. Basculin 2 needed 14 while Basculin 3 took 16.

Bulbapedia and Serebii.net also note that Basculin must take 294 repulse damage to evolve, contrary to our data. That all being said, we haven’t quite figured out the magic number to evolve Basculin, as it has some influencing factor that we can’t quite see.
