Pixar’s Elemental characters remind fans of Fireboy and Watergirl

Pixar revealed the title and publication date for its next project. ElementalThe film will be released on Monday. The film, which is scheduled for release in June 2023, takes place in a world in which the classic elements of fire, water and land are the characters who live in that world. This film makes sense for a studio known for creating humanoid forms that can express emotions and have souls. The announcement was accompanied by concept art that reminded viewers of the other elemental duos they loved in gaming and film history.

These characters may look familiar to you, and you are not alone. The similarities are being pointed out by fans to six of the Fireboy/Watergirl games developed and published jointly by Oslo Albet. The first of the cooperative puzzle platformers came out in 2009, and playing the classic Flash game (it’s playable on Coolmath Games) feels like traveling back in time. It’s also on Coolmath’s top ten games, at the time of writing.

Fireboy and Watergirl 1 – Forest TempleFlash game sauce, an early version of the internet. Every level contains a variety of elements puzzles, which get more difficult with each passing level. Fireboy is limited to activating or traversing through red items. Watergirl has the reverse. You can add in moving platforms and levers to make the game more challenging. (This is especially true if you, like me, can’t find a friend to play with and operate both the arrow keys and W.A.D. It’s like playing the piano with one hand. I digress.

Of course, the idea of elemental characters isn’t new. Avatar of The Last Airbender’s characters bend the elements. But film and television history also includes characters that are literal representations of those elements — even if some of them have some Other features. I’m referring to the cinematic classic and Taylor Lautner vehicle, Sharkboy’s Adventures and Lavagirl’s AdventuresThe film was released in theaters on May 5, 2005.

It can be as high as Elemental has us looking forward to that 2023 release, it’s also given us a pretty wholesome excuse to look back at some of these 2000s cultural masterworks.
