Overwatch 2 bug forces some players into buying skins
Overwatch 2’s Release has run into another problem during its turbulent launch. Users are reporting an issue that allows them to buy skins and other items with their in-game currency. The bug isn’t refundable.
Reddit user Dracyoshi wrote a detailed description of the bug in the Overwatch subreddit. It seems that keyboard commands will be registered by the game even if users are not chatting. People who chat in Hero Gallery may accidentally enter keystrokes that result in buying skins. Dracyoshi ended up accidentally buying a Plutonium Skin for 300 Legacy Credits.
Although this error involved only 300 Legacy Credits, it was considered minor. However, the replies to the thread pointed out more severe examples. The top comment mentioned they accidentally unlocked Kiriko’s Legendary Skin for 1900 Credits. Both posters mentioned Credits which are the remaining balance from Overwatch. As it works now, Overwatch Coins are the new currency and cost roughly $10 for 1,000 coins, so if we were to translate that cost, this user accidentally spent roughly $19 on the Kiriko skin they didn’t want.
These sales can’t be refunded or compensated for. When Dracyoshi filed a report with Blizzard support, a representative said that they weren’t able to offer refunds or compensation for unlocks made with the in-game currency. “All those unlocks are meant to be final,” support said. So for now, players are left to share their feedback via the game’s forums.
Polygon reached out to Blizzard Entertainment representatives for comments. We will keep you updated as soon as we get back.
Blizzard Entertainment released Overwatch 2 on Tuesday, and there’s been no shortage of problems since the release. There have been issues with long queue times and server errors; players have reported being disconnected from games; and players’ progress and items have, in some cases, not carried over from the original game. Blizzard was forced to rescind a feature that required users to register an account using a number. Blizzard Entertainment took down the game Thursday night for fixes.
