Oaken Provides a New Take Full of Celtic and Tribal vibes on the Tactical Genre

The story begins with the tree. Oaken’s story revolves around the Great Oak and its spirits: the Lady, a clueless, yet pretty brave little sprout – along with her awakening into this whimsical world, she inherits a quest to bring back the Oaksong – a spell which has kept the inhabitants of the Oak peaceful for countless cycles; Kidu, a fierce and unpredictable fire Spirit, who has his very own ideas on how to deal with all of this mess; and the Pathfinder – a mysterious mentor, who helps them reach their destination along with many other spirit Guides discovered during the journey.

In most tactical roguelikes and card battlers, the conflict pits “your side” versus the “enemy side”. Oaken’s battles focus on the hero who is participating in it.  Heros are able to summon spirits, use spells, or trinkets. You will lose the game, of course, if you defeat your hero. The so-called line of sight and “action areas” are calculated from the position of your hero. They are targeted by dialogues and events, but it’s up to Lady and Kidu at the end to find their own way to resolve the conflict.

Laki Studios’ team had a lot of fun creating the cute, crazy Spirits who inhabit the Oak. Oaken was influenced by celtic, slavic and other folklore. They also wanted to take that foundation and twist it in a playful, fun direction. Each unit of the Mechanics Department is designed to be able to work independently. Oaken has a “front” and “back”, and can rotate in one of six hexagonal directions. Depending on their position and rotation, they can use multiple abilities, backstabs, dodges, charges – there’s plenty of placement, movement and attack actions to outsmart your enemy. They also created a relaxed mode to support those who want the game for its story, but are more interested in a relaxing experience.

It is no secret that Tactical and Roguelike games are popular. OakenIt places more emphasis on the positioning of the player and rotation, which the team felt was underused in this genre. Laki Studios has also put in a lot of effort on Oaken’s character design. The design of each spirit, from concept artworks to finished illustrations, was meticulous. They also paid special care to the game’s world building. This game has been developed for many years and is well thought out and coherent. Oaken’s story about the cute spirits has actual meaning.
