Find out what’s new and exciting in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2,Polygon spoke to Diego Rodriguez, studio director at Fair Play Labs via email. Continue reading to learn more about our discussion.
Polygon: Can you talk about what’s new here from a core gameplay perspective? What surprises do you expect players to experience with the new gameplay? BrawlThe following are some of the ways to get in touch with us: Brawl 2How about updated mechanicals?
Rodriguez:It’s a tough question because it is a brand new game. We’ve changed almost every aspect of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 1.We hope that all the players will be surprised by these changes, which range from small to large.
- We’ve completely redone how movement works by changing to analog inputs compared to digital inputs from the first game, meaning things feel smoother and more responsive when moving around… which opens up a whole new world in terms of gameplay and strategy.
- We’ve also added more options like horizontal attacks, defensive rolls and dodges.
- We added something that is not very common to the platform fighters — a meter mechanic. The game will be more complex with this new system. This meter allows you to modify your attacks, perform ultimates, increase damage, cancel slime and do many other unique things!
- The character design is something else that makes this game stand out from the previous one. You can find out more about On by clicking here. NASB 2Each character is unique to cater for the different styles of play.
Any favorite Supers you can share, just as a taste of what’s to come?
Although all the Ultimate attacks look cool, they are not. I really love Jimmy’s and April’s but my favorite is Zim just because I’m a HUGE Zim fan! Prepare for doom through the ultimate tool of destruction… minimoose!
I hope everyone looks at the move of their favorite characters and thinks, “Wow, that’s cool!”
Which players did you choose this time? Any surprises you think fans won’t expect? Any fans not returning? Brawl?
This is probably one of the hardest decisions we made when we started to design the game — a lot of thought came into it. This was one of the hardest decisions we made when we started to design the game — a lot of thought went into it.
The final lineup is very pleasing to us. There were many options.
Surprises? Yes! It’s funny that none of the characters we’ve seen on the list have been completely correct. Just wait a bit and you will know who made it and who didn’t!
What’s your approach to implementing VO? Do you use Nickelodeon or original material?
All voiceovers are recorded specifically for the game. After the character design, animation and integration, we create the script for each one. The script will include all movements, feelings, reactions and campaign lines. This script is a collection of lines taken from shows and lines that the characters could possibly say.
After our first pass of the script, a Nickelodeon writer double checks and adds more lines to the script, after Nickelodeon’s approval it goes into recording.
What are the Roguelike features of the Single-player Campaign? You can give a comparison to help people get an idea what they should expect.
I don’t think we can directly compare it to anything that is out there, at least not that I know of. You will immediately understand the mechanics of the campaign if you have played roguelike games. We made a lot of adaptations to the gameplay so that it would work for the platform fighter.
I don’t want to spoil it too much, but basically we have a main storyline and you start with SpongeBob. You unlock new characters that you can then use to advance the story. Each character also has a unique backstory. The structure is the same on roguelike games — you progress through a series of battles, and if you lose, you keep some of your progress (characters unlocked, currencies, etc.) Use it on your subsequent attempts to continue your progress. The middle is filled with cool enemies, bosses and campaign-specific elements.
The biggest complaint players have about NASB was the perceived value for the cost — would you say you’ve taken that to heart for NASB2? Do you intend to continue supporting this game beyond the season pass announced?
Absolutely. We’ve put a lot of care into building a much bigger and more polished experience for NASB 2It’s a big change and one we hope the players take note of. The game has a number of additions: better graphics, sound and animation, Voice Over at Launch, better Netcode, Campaign, new gameplay modes… We hope that players enjoy the game, and get a good value out of it.
The season pass is something that I am very excited about!
How did you learn the most important lessons from developing your first website? Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl — and in seeing players’ reactions to it?
Many lessons were learned from the original game. It was important to launch with VO, and we did that this time. We learned a great deal and applied as much of it as possible. NASB 2 to make it a great game — down to small gameplay changes, crossplay and online, and how we approach single player content.
Players’ reactions to the first game was incredible. It was incredible to see how excited people were about the first game. The feedback and reception we received on the game was very positive.
