New Sons Of The Forest Trailer Is Terrifyingly Brutal, Spring 2022 Release Announced

The Forest is my favorite book. A small group of survivors spent just under 40 hours building defenses around the crash site, searching for rare weapons and food in underground caverns, as well as keeping cannibals away and later, controlling grotesque mutants. Two trailers were released earlier in the year for Sons of the Forest. They highlight a renewed emphasis on storytelling. An unnamed NPC – specifically, a nonvolatile mutant – is slated to be the player’s companion. But, beyond short action sequences and montages, Sons of the Forest footage from the past inspired more questions than answers.

The exciting but frustrating tradition of narrative vagueness continues with a new trailer. We finally have a Spring 2022 release date.

As you can expect, Sons of the Forests’ mechanics build upon the survival horror systems from the first game. It is now possible to collect materials and make shelters, as well as hunting equipment. The eating mechanic – most notable when the player character kills a turtle and eats its raw meat (damn!) – is back as well. Horrorous enemies are waiting for you if your ventures into dark forests or into caves. To defeat new mutants, which have fleshy bristles or conjoined bodies, you will need to acquire new weapons – shotguns, stun batons, and more will aid you in the open world.

Javy Gwaltney enjoyed The Forest too, giving it an 9 in his assessment Game Informer review and concluding with:

“Perhaps the highest praise I can give The Forest is just how natural the game ties together. Many emergent stories games end up with a novelty at the end that is too much. Both for survival and horror, The Forest is an incredible success. It gives players just the right amount of freedom to enjoy the challenge of this hellish nightmare.”

Sons of the Forest is available on PC from May 20, 2022. If you haven’t played the first game yet, I’d highly recommend it, and be sure to read Javy’s 30 Wacky And Gross Things You Can Do In The Forest piece while you’re at it!
