New Leaked Images Of Slim PS5’s Detachable Disc Drive Reveals It Requires Internet To Pair

Sony announced new slim versions of the PlayStation 5 earlier this month. The disc drive as well as the digital version are both getting upgraded, and Sony also unveiled a new removable disc drive. It can be attached to the slimmer version of the PS5 digital console, turning it into one that uses discs. This drive appears to require internet access in order to be used. 

Online, some images of an upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III PS5 slim bundle (thanks to, CharlierIntelDisc Drive and PS5 are paired at startup only with Internet.

Many players, and those who are interested in video game preservation, are not thrilled about this online requirement. There could be a time when servers that the consoles and disc drives are attached to go offline and render the accessory obsolete. According to the instructions on the box it appears that the Internet connection is only required for the first time, when pairing the disc with the console. It’s not clear if this requirement will continue after.
