Netflix Partnering With Take-Two On A Bioshock Film

Netflix has been rather successful with TV adaptations of popular video games like Castlevania and The Witcher. Netflix is now focusing its streaming efforts on 2K Game’s Bioshock, a series that splices genes. However, this movie will not be available.

The Hollywood Reporter Netflix announced today that they have partnered with 2K Interactive, the parent company of 2K and Vertigo entertainment to bring the series to fruition. This is The THRReport calls it an effort to “develop potential cinematic worlds,” which makes sense considering Bioshock Infinite’s multiple facets. The project is currently without names or details about the writing and directing.

Bioshock was a long-running Hollywood project that Hollywood wanted to adapt. The 2009 adaptation was finally announced. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was helming a movie based on the franchise, but that sadly fell apart after a couple of years. Verbinski stated that it was an R-rated movie when the project ended in 2017 and spoke candidly about its dissolution. It was R-rated because I thought it would be appropriate and the movie is expensive. This is a large world that we are building and can’t just go to places to film. It would be impossible to create an entire universe underworld. The combination of universal’s rating and price didn’t make it feel right.

Bioshock Infinite’s core principles, which are a man and a city and a lighthouse as Bioshock’s tenants, could be used to create a new series. This would allow it to stand apart from the Columbias and Raptures. However, chances are very high we’ll see those submerged and floating cities before exploring other doomed civilizations led by deeply flawed megalomaniacs. The allure of bringing Andrew Ryan and his Big Daddies and Little Sisters to life is likely too iconic to avoid.

Is there a place where the Bioshock movie should be shot? Would you prefer a repeat of the old tales, or something completely new that uses the Bioshock templates? Leave us a comment!
