Mortal Kombat: Onslaught Preview – How Mortal Kombat Takes On The Hero-Collection RPG Genre

Mortal Kombat Onslaught is a brand new Mortal Kombat mobile title that NetherRealm has released just a few days after Mortal Kombat 1. The squad-based hero-collection RPG allows you to build teams from iconic Mortal Kombat characters and take on different challenges. We had the chance to play the game before its release today to get a feel for what we can expect.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a real-time, squad-based multiplayer game that expands Mortal Kombat’s universe. The four game modes allow players to unleash character-specific powers (such as special attacks, targeted attacks, and yes, even Fatalities that have been toned down). Ed Boon’s and Dominic Cianciolo’s new story mode is a completely original narrative. Boon has obviously been with the franchise from the start, while Cianciolo has worked on the story of the franchise since before the series’ 2011 reboot.

Scorpion, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade are all part of the story as they go on a mission to stop Shinnok. The story mode is a standalone game that features full-motion animations and narrates a completely different tale from those of the other games. Story mode is expected to be completed in 2024 through the Post-Launch Plan. The game’s Story battles will also reach 300 by then.

In addition to Story mode, players will be able to take part of Arena’s battles in PvP and Boss Tower, which pits powerful characters against each other, as well as Chasm. The latter is a unique battle scenario that can’t be found anywhere else, like a battle against six versions Johnny Cage. Khronicles, a mode that will introduce and allow players to try out characters after launch is also available.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught

The Mortal Kombat universe has a roster that is constantly expanding. More than 50 characters are available to players at launch, and a post-launch plan includes dozens more. The class/role of each character can be changed depending on their version or level. Each fighter has a unique ability, such as Raiden’s lightning attack with a wide area of effect or Goro’s powerfully stomping an enemy. Kitanas with three stars may be ranged while those with five stars could be melee. It will be important as your team grows to include more characters, each with a different specialty.

One example is a Warrior-class Scorpion, who will be the main damage dealer on the battlefield, while Shao Kahn, a Defender class, has the purpose of attracting attention and protecting his teammates. While an Assassin class Jade is able to sneakily bypass Warriors and Defenders in order to eliminate Support or Snipers, he’s vulnerable because of his low defense and health stats. Consider all three when deciding whether you want to create a team that’s purely offensive, tactically-oriented or defensively-minded.

The core loop of the game is the same as in other games like Marvel Strike Force, Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes and others. It focuses outside of the gameplay on the ever-growing list of characters. You are constantly looking for the latest additions and upgrading them. You can boost your characters by improving their 14 different stat categories through a Gear system. Also, you can equip relics that can have synergies for the fighter. The rarest of relics can even reveal Fatalities to the character. NetherRealm told me that, despite the tendency of the genre to power creep, they will try to maintain the balance by updating old characters when new characters are introduced.

NetherRealm says this is the most ambitious live content plan for mobile in its history. The developer promises new game modes, as well as a steady stream of additional characters. The plan could see console characters and licensed guests joining the game’s roster.
