Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases the First Aircraft in the New Expert Series – the ATR 42-600 and the ATR 72-600
Microsoft Flight Simulator today released the first entry into a brand-new series of highly authentic and accurate aircraft called “Expert Series”. In this bundle, the ATR 42600 & ATR 72600 will be released and provide a realistic and incredible aviation experience. ATR, short for “Regional Transport Aircraft” in both French and Italian, was formed through the combined efforts of Aerospatiale (known as Airbus today) of France and Aeritalia (now known as Leonardo) of Italy specifically to create this aircraft. ATR aircraft have been widely used in a number of applications, including cargo and passenger transport, as well as military.
ATR 42 600
It is a commuter jet with twin engines and a turboprop high-wing that seats up to fifty passengers. In March 2010, it made its maiden flight. It was put into service at the end of 2012. It has a distinctive appearance, with its elegant curves and lines. The aircraft is able to operate from a variety of airports.
The 42600 is a modernized version of ATR 42 regional aircraft, an original design from the early 1980s. Named “42” due to the number of seats of the original version, the aircraft was designed to be a highly efficient airframe optimized for commuter lines.
It is operated by two flight crew members and features a glass cockpit with advanced technology, a spacious cabin and better efficiency and performance than its predecessors. The aircraft is 74 feet 5 inches long and 24 feet 11 inches high. The aircraft has a main wing that spans 80 feet 7 inches with a high aspect ratio and an empennage T. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127XT-M engines, each delivering 2,400 horsepower to a 6-blade propeller.
While not a short takeoff and landing aircraft (STOL), the 42-600 has an excellent performance on small fields and at high altitudes. It can take off from sea level in 3,631 feet, when fully loaded. This aircraft can travel 835 miles at a speed of 345 mph.

ATR 72-6600
The 72-600 is a refined, and the most notable, version of the ATR 72, which is a stretched variant of the company’s ATR 42 family of aircraft. A multi-paneled cockpit and improved cabin design optimize the pilot’s efficiency. Aviators can push themselves to the limit with the ATR 72600 as it cruises the skies around the world.
ATR 72600, a regional twin-turboprop aircraft, with high wings, made its maiden fly on July 24, 2009. It was put into service in 2010 ATR 72600 has a crew of two, and it can transport up to 70 passengers. While primarily serving as a passenger carrier, the 72-600 has also been used by various countries’ militaries for maritime patrol and logistical support.
While designed for and used as a short-haul carrier, the ATR 72-600’s form projects a tone of sportiness and performance. The ATR 72-600 has a sleek, long fuselage with T-tail, and a main wing that is high aspect ratio, but also slightly swept. The wingspan of the aircraft is 88 feet 9 inches.
The 72-600 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127XT-M turboprop engines that each deliver 2,750 horsepower to 6-blade Hamilton Standard propellers. ATR 72600 features a range up to 850 miles and cruise speeds of 320 miles an hour.
