Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases New Aircraft in the “Local Legends” Series Today with Fokker F. VII

Fokker F.VIIb/3m Southern Cross and Fokker F.VIIb/3m Southern Cross are brought to life in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Today, we are excited to announce that the Fokker F. VII airplane, the second plane in our “Local Legends” series, is available now in Microsoft Flight Simulator. This series is about aviation’s history and the releases coincide with every World Update. The Local Legends represent aircraft which are well-known locally but not as widely to an international audience.

Fokker, the Netherlands’ manufacturer of F.VII stands out as one of aviation history’s greatest aircrafts. Because of its durability, reliability, power and ability to carry loads, it was an important part of the Golden Age of Flight of 1920s and 1930s. F.VII was first to fly on November 24, 1924 and introduced to the general public in 1925. It served as an early carrier, transported cargo and carried airmail.

Although originally intended to be single-engine, the F.VII high-wing airplane was built primarily with a tri-motor. The three Wright J-6 Whirlwind-radial engines deliver 300 horsepower each and are powered by three nine-cylinder Wright J-6 Whirlwind-radial engines. F.VII’s range was approximately 750 miles with a cruise speed at 111 mph and an approach and landing distance just below 750 feet made it ideal for many situations.

The Fokker F.VII can carry 8 people and nearly 5,000 pounds worth of cargo. Or a mixture of both, making it a popular aircraft for airmail, cargo, and passenger lines. Many explorers used the F.VII to fly across oceans and continents and into unexplored areas. Fokker F.VII, a remarkable, iconic icon from the early days in aviation, is still cherished by many.

Southern Cross

Famous Southern Cross is the Fokker F.VIIb/3m aircraft that completed of one of aviation’s greatest firsts, the incredibly ambitious crossing of the Pacific Ocean—7,250 miles from Oakland, California, to Brisbane, Australia. Nine days after they began, while battling storms, exhaustion and equipment malfunctions, the four pilots reached Brisbane, in Australia’s Queensland.

Aviators used a navigation system to navigate across the Pacific. Southern Cross on a course that first took them to Hawaii, then on an incredible 3,167-mile, 34-hour leg of the journey to Fiji — the first time an airplane landed on the island — and finally onto Brisbane. The Southern Cross is credited with the success, according to historians.

Friendship

Friendship was the Fokker F.VIIb/3m aircraft that traversed the Atlantic Ocean with Amelia Earhart, soon to be renowned aviator. This trimotor aircraft crossed the Atlantic in just 20 hours. It started at Trepassey harbor, Newfoundland. It then touched down at Burry Port (Wales). The flight of the high-wing monoplane helped indelibly stamp the Fokker F.VII line of aircraft into the annals of history as one of early aviation’s true greats.

Josephine Ford

Fokker F.VIIa/3m was flown by Richard Evelyn Byrd during his brave expedition to the North Pole in May 1926. It was the first time that an aircraft had ever reached the North Pole at this point in history. Although there are still questions about whether the effort was successful, this is one of the greatest aviation adventures and it established the Fokker F.VIIa/3m trimotor as an icon of the Golden Age.

Fokker F.VIIa

Fokker F.VIIa, a monoplane with a single engine that was built by the Dutch aviation company Fokker. The F.VIIa, one of the world’s first transport aircraft, was slightly larger than Fokker’s original F.VII and also sported a number of technical improvements, including a heated cabin. It could hold up to 8 passengers and 1,750 pounds of cargo. The first flight was made on March 12, 1925. The F.VIIa was one of many airlines which flew across Europe and other parts of the world.

KLM Livery

The Fokker F.VII was an important aircraft during the early days of KLM, which was founded in Holland. Anthony Fokker delivered the first F.VII in distinctive KLM livery to KLM in 1924. The aircraft was first to fly from the Netherlands into the Dutch East Indies. The F.VII allowed the airline to flourish and laid the groundwork for what would become one of the world’s premier air carriers.
