Microsoft Flight Simulator Introduces the World’s Heaviest Aircraft, the Antonov AN-225 Mriya

The proceeds will be used to rebuild the aircraft in Ukraine.

It is part of Microsoft Flight Simulator’s ongoing digital preservation efforts, it is pleased to introduce the world’s largest aircraft, the Ukrainian-built Antonov An-225 Mriya, today. It is an ultra-heavy lift jet transport aircraft featuring six engines, and holds the record as the world’s longest plane as well as many other size-related aviation records. It was the only Mriya that was completed. The Russian invasion in Ukraine in 2022 rendered it inoperable. There are efforts underway to restore the plane and fly it again.

Using the An-124 Ruslan as a design base, in 1985 Antonov began engineering a project called “Mk. 401.” It was later named the An-225, since it could carry up to 225 tons of cargo. Apart from being much larger than the An-124, the Mriya (“dream” in Ukrainian) was fitted with six turbofan engines, the same power sources used by the Ruslan. Further distinguishing it from the An-124, the An-225’s empennage took a different form from that of its smaller progenitor. The An-225 had two vertical stabilizers instead of the single large one. This was due to the aerodynamics involved in carrying huge loads high up on its fuselage. Also, the landing gear of the Mriya was larger than that of the An-124. The Mriya’s total number of wheels included 32. This is the most wheel-able part of the main landing gear.

Antonov was able to produce two An-225s. The aircraft became the largest ever to take flight when it flew its first flight, on December 21st 1988. The AN-225 also set 110 new world records during a flight that took place on March 22, 1989. This is a significant record in itself.

The Buran orbiter was fitted to the upper fuselage of the aircraft at Baikonur Cosmodrome, a few weeks later. On June 9, 1989, Paris Air Show spectators were stunned to see the An-225 with Buran on top, passing through the clouds and landing.

Tragically, the Mriya, which was destroyed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 27, 2022 became unusable. The Mriya will be brought back to life by combining parts of the An-225 that were destroyed with the pieces of the aircraftframe that never was completed.

An-225 has a length of 275 feet 7 inches (longer than that of the Wright Flyer’s first flight), a height of 59 feet 5 inches and wingspans of 290ft. Six Progress D-18T turbofan high-bypass turbofan engines provide 51,600 pounds each of thrust. It can lift up to 559.580 pounds (25.3 tons), and has a maximum weight of 1,410.958 pounds. The range is 9,600 miles with a maximum service ceiling at 36,000ft. It cruises at 500 MPH and can reach 530 MPH.

Six liveries are available on the An-225 Mriya:

  • Antonov Airlines ‘2010’
  • Antonov Airlines ‘2008’
  • Antonov Airlines ‘2006’
  • Weiß
  • Xbox Aviators Club
