MCU’s Fantastic Four movie will not be helmed by Spider-Man director

Marvel’s going to need a new director for its upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Jon Watts was an original director attached to this project. He stated that he needed a break from superhero films and has decided not to continue with it. Deadline published the news on Friday. Disney and Watts swiftly confirmed the decision.

Watts worked previously with Disney in all three Tom Holland Spider-Man films. Watts was appointed to direct Fantastic FourHe was next but, after having helmed the whole Spider-Man trilogy it appears he decided he needed to get away from superheroes.

“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life changing experience for me,” Watts said in a statement to Deadline. “I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

Marvel studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that there was no bad blood between the director and the studio, saying, “Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-ManFilms has been an absolute pleasure. He was a great friend and we look forward to working with him again to make the film. Fantastic FourWe are not in the MCU, but we understand his decision to leave and support him. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”

Disney has announced Fantastic FourThe movie premiered in 2020 but was not released.
