Marvel’s Avengers – Breaking Down Spider-Man’s Gameplay And Moveset

Since before the game even launched, fans of Marvel’s Avengers, specifically those on PlayStation, have anxiously waited for Spider-Man to swing into the adventure. The arrival of Marvel’s most iconic character, Spider-Man, is finally happening on November 30. The final question revolves around his story and the way Spider-Man operates in-game. We have seen his costume, and we can get a feel for his personality from a trailer.

Spider-Man makes his debut via “With Great Power,” a free Hero Event. Crystal Dynamics said that the size of the story was not as large as the Operations and larger expansions. As for the character himself, Crystal Dynamics shares that their Spider-Man, voiced by Sean Chiplock, is in his early 20s and has been a superhero for “a little while.” This would indicate that he began his career after A-Day. It could also mean that he has spent all of his life protecting an Avengers-less New York City. This is not an origin story. Spider-Man has been working alone for most of his career, but he is now an expert in crime-fighting.

Peter discovers a dark plot linked to AIM which may prove more than he can handle. Black Widow and Peter exchange information over AIM after they interacted via the “Tiny Dancer,” an online pseudonym. He meets up with the whole team and accepts to fight this menace alongside them, but he has trouble working under a team dynamic. Spider-Man, by the end of the story will have made his decision whether to continue as an Avenger. Other characters involved in the story include Liz Allen, Peter’s friend and college classmate, who players will find in the Ant Hill. Crystal Dynamics did not confirm that Mark Raxton would be appearing in the story. He is best known as Molten Man to comic-lovers.

Now let’s move on to gameplay. Can Spider-Man swing web? He can. Crystal Dynamics described web-swinging in a modified, more restrictive form of Ms. Marvel’s and Black Widow’s ways of swinging about. Spider-Man isn’t limited by poles and ledges for attaching web lines. Spider-Man’s webs can attach to almost anything even though you may not always be able to see them. Because he is able to swing in larger spaces, Crystal Dynamics believes that fun is more important than realism, even though it may not make sense at times.

Spider-Man will be able to web-swim by pressing the right shoulder trigger, and then jumping by holding the left shoulder trigger. Spider-Man feels a lot different than other heroes who have their moves mapped directly to the jump buttons. This design gives players more control over activating/deactivating web-swinging and should feel familiar to fans of dedicated Spider-Man games, such as Insomniac’s series.

There is also wall-crawling, where players are free to cling and move about on any surface. Spider-Man is also able to wall-run, just like Captain America or Black Panther. Spidey has sticky feet and can still wall-run. Spidey can jump into the web by running left to right and banking around corners.

Spider-Man’s web-shooters can be an effective offensive weapon. By shooting targets, you build up web status, which is a meter that immobilizes your enemies when it reaches full. To make webbed enemies stick to walls you can knock them into the wall. Webs can also inflict various debuffs unlocked from a skill tree, such as making webbed targets more vulnerable to damage and status effects from other heroes or causing them to drop more health packs upon defeat. Crystal Dynamics describes Spider-Man as a support hero.

Web shooters have alternate firing modes such as a charge shot, web bombs, a web tether to stick enemies together, and a trap set on floors or walls that ensnare bad guys. Spidey also has a broad-reaching web attack which pushes mobs to the back while imobilizing them. Spider-Man has the ability to deploy a drone capable of firing web projectiles that can be used to tie down enemies. Bubble shields can be created around Spidey by the drone, which assists in protecting objectives.

Spider-Man is best known for his web-wrecking balls. Spidey uses a giant web ball to damage targets. While some abilities can be accessed right away, others require skill-tree upgrade to unlock. Despite his many web attacks, Spider-Man excels at crowd control. Crystal Dynamics claims that he’s not a skilled character. Spider-Man relies on his acrobatic skills to deal with most threats.

Peter uses his Spider-Sense as a defense ability. Spider-Man can dodge attacks from other heroes by hitting the button whenever an indicator is displayed. Perfect dodges grant a defense boost that makes you stronger for a short time and also gives the attacker an impact armor buff. Spider-Sense, like his other moves has several upgrades that make it even more potent.

Spider-Man offers many unlocked costumes. While he will be wearing the redesigned Spidey costume, you also have the option to unlock the Steve Ditko-designed original. Crystal Dynamics revealed recently their versions of Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Armor MK 1 MK 3, Secret Wars and Secret Wars costumes.

In the footage that we have seen of Spider-Man, it was clear that he is a fun character to play with. He should be a great addition to the roster. On Monday November 29th, players can view him in action at an Avengers War Table deep-dive presentation. This was the day before Spider-Man arrived. We can’t wait to finally get our hands on Spider-Man, and if With Great Power’s story proves to be as exciting as its starring hero’s gameplay, PlayStation fans may have a great reason to boot up Marvel’s Avengers one more time.
