Magic: The Gathering’s first Warhammer 40,000 cards revealed

Wizards of the Coast is finally unveiling the Warhammer 40,000-themed cards. The Gathering: Magic and the Gathering. Announced in February 2021, the Universes Beyond product line will include four standard Commander decks and four collector’s edition Commander decks, which are all scheduled to be released on Aug. 12. Three Secret Lair drops will be released in the Games Workshop collaboration. A few preview cards were also announced on Thursday via Twitch.

The new Commander decks include a mix of brand new cards as well as reprints classic cards with 40K-themed artwork. These decks will include Necron Dynasties (black), The Imperium’s ForcesWhite, black, or blue Tyranid Swarm(green, red, and blue). The Ruinous Powers(blue-black and red). Abaddon, the Despoiler (5/5 monster with Trample), was the only Legendary Creature that was revealed. The card contains the Mark of Chaos Atcendant ability. This adds cascade cards to your deck based on how many life you have lost. This should give you plenty of opportunities to trigger additional spells.

The concept of collector’s edition Commander decks is a first for Wizards. Presenters said Thursday that the decks will be “fully foiled” and will include a new “surge foil” treatment on certain cards. The treatment is being shown in photos and video.

Squad is another ability that was mentioned in the presentation. This ability allows you to summon a new Ultramarine-themed creature at a cost of 2 mana.
