Lullaby: How Motive Recreated an Iconic Trailer from the Original Dead Space
Original Dead SpaceIt was released in 2008 and offered an original experience which seamlessly combined elements of horror and sci-fi. The game became a worldwide hit and is widely regarded as the greatest survival horror videogame ever created. The trailer for Lullaby Trailer was released along with the game. It quickly became an icon piece of media.
The trailer captures the mood of the game perfectly by combining haunting music with terrifying scenes. In the trailer, we saw the USG Ishimura (the doomed miner ship) that serves as the backdrop for the game. Fans fell in love instantly with the trailer’s memorable and evocative introduction. The trailer was so popular that it was used for other games in the series.
The remake was completed more than a decade ago. As part of that process we naturally spent a lot of time examining the original game – and we also revisited all the media surrounding it to use as reference. While I was working, I would frequently have the trailer playing in a loop in the background on another computer…and that creepy rendition of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” just started burrowing into my mind.
Once the announcement was made, fans started posting on the internet about how great it would be for them to see the old trailer remade. It’s been a while since I last posted. Dead SpaceBeing a huge fan of the movie, I knew that this was possible. As a surprise to the entire team, I pulled some footage from production and created my own Lullaby Trailer. Once they saw my work, others on the team offered their assistance.
We worked hard to capture all the shots we needed, which wasn’t as easy as you might think. I was originally going to create a 1:1 duplicate of the original. But many shots from the original trailer were captured in the USM Valor portion of the game. I wanted to make sure all the footage was of the Ishimura, since it is the primary setting of the game – so I decided to use shots that matched the composition and subject of the original, but change the locations when necessary. (There’s actually still one quick shot captured from the ValorYou might be able to identify it.
The most challenging parts, though, were all the Necromorph attacks; some of the footage is onscreen for just a fraction of a second, so it was tough trying to capture the exact same scenes – with proper lighting and clear composition, no less! And let’s just say Necromorphs are not the most willing collaborators. Olivier Asselin, Audio Director on the game, jumped in to update the trailer’s audio with our own recording of the vocals, and did an amazing job of perfectly recreating the chaotic cacophony of instruments that accompanies the jump cuts.
Every developer who contributed to the remake has so much affection for it. Dead Space. Because I had the opportunity to be an Environment Artist, this series holds a special place in mine. Dead Space 2And Dead Space 3. It was a great experience to be able to bring up a favorite piece of media that I had from the original game. We’re really proud of the end result, and we hope fans will appreciate this trip down memory lane as much as we do.
