Lost Ark server queues: devs to create new region after huge launch

Lost ArkThe hugely multiplayer Steam game, ‘Gems,’ has received a new server area to reduce the wait times for European players.

This game was launched with an explosion that made it the 2nd most popular game on Steam. It surpassed peak concurrent player counts to become #2. The game’s peak number of players was 1.33million, which narrowly beats the Steam legends. However, the real question here is how many of the million plus players in the game actually were playing? However Lost ArkAlthough the launch was smooth in Americas, European servers were plagued by very long login queues. Over the weekend hundreds of thousands of European gamers waited to get the chance to play the game.

This I can personally attest to: I tried to log onto the London game Saturday afternoon and found that there were queues for between 8,000- 13,000 players. It took me nearly an hour to log on. I was fortunate enough to get the Triangle StrategyDemo to Hand.

Amazon and Developer Smilegate, both of which publish Lost ArkThe West, which has it available in South Korea from late 2019, announced that they would create an EU server region in order to reduce the amount of people. But this plan is not without controversy for the game’s frustrated European audience.

“Please note that this will be a distinct new region (separated from Central Europe) without cross-region play availability,” noted the developers. “This also means that region-wide features, such as your Royal Crystal and Silver balances from Central Europe will not be accessible in the new European region. The new region will be ideal for players who have not yet created their character or haven’t otherwise committed to stay on their existing server.”

The new server area will not provide any benefits to players who already invest significant time or have unlocked rewards. You can read more about it here. Lost ArkIt is not possible to transfer characters between server servers. Some resources and activities can be shared among server locations, but nothing can be shared with characters and players in different regions.

Smilegate and Amazon argued that the best solution was to create a new region for servers. “Due to the game’s architecture this is the only way to accommodate more players in Europe,” they said in their statement.

LONG login queues during the launch of an online game or expansion is not a problem. Usually, they improve in a matter of weeks. However, Lost Ark’s launch issues do seem to expose an inflexibility in the game’s setup, as well as a discrepancy in its American and European launch strategies.

Some of the members Lost Ark community protested what they saw as an underestimation of the game’s European audience. Reddit users pointed out that North America is home to 22 servers, and the South America region hosts nine more. Central Europe has only 19 servers. Another noted that server maintenance, events and communications all seem to be organized on a schedule that doesn’t work well for those in European time zones.

Smilegate announced and Amazon made a package that included a new mount and many other items to compensate for disruption. This gift package will be made available to all players who have played the game since March 1, and will only be accessible after the launch of the new server regions.
