Junji Ito is guest artist on Magic: The Gathering’s Phyrexia set

Wizards of the Coast invites Junji Ito (Japan horror manga author) back for more The Gathering is MagicArt for cards. Ito is back after an October Secret Lair drop. Phyrexia: All Will Be OneThis is the 2023rd set. Wizards announced this Tuesday in its WeeklyMTG streaming broadcast.

Ito’s intricate linework is as well-known as his creepy themes. One of the new pieces is called Elesh Norn is Mother of Machines — a 4/7 Legendary Creature with vigilance who triggers additional abilities from permanents. The image depicts the Phyrexian Praetor posing in a threatening posture, his arms crossed and head up. The Phyrexians is a non-human, human-almagamation of metal and meat. They are the only ones who can speak their in-game language. Phyrexia: All Will Be OneIto will find it a great place to practice his art, since the environment encourages body transformation and horror.

Magic announced in a release that the new set would include 10 planeswalkers. It is expected to launch on February 10, 2010. In addition to the traditional booster and collector’s packs, All Will Be One will also include two new Commander decks — Corrupting Influence(white/black/green). Rebellion Rising (red/white) — and three additional Secret Lair drops. Jumpstart Boosters also will be returning.

Also new for this release is a special raised foil treatment, which Wizards is calling “oil slick.” You can see more examples of the treatment alongside all the other cards revealed on the stream today.
