Introducing Farworld Pioneers: an Open World, Sci-fi Sandbox

Hey there, I’m Rho Watson, the lead developer behind Farworld Pioneers. The 2D adventure galaxie galaxy sandbox is an amalgamation of several genres. More than that, though, it’s the game I’ve always wanted to make. I’ll tell you why.

When I was a teenager, I enjoyed playing soccer. InfiniminerWas one of the first to use the online version. Minecraft. While the idea of an online sandbox captured my imagination it did not really achieve what I had hoped. My grandiose projects were finished and there was no reason to keep them. They sat in a heap, unused and dormant, as there was nobody to use them. It was a common sight for my friends to visit, inspect it briefly, and then go their separate ways.

After years of enjoying these games, and having been part of their development, I finally decided to take the plunge and create an online sandbox with all the thrill of creating and building, and with AI residents that actually provide a reason to those things to exist. I created the game to provide players with more than just curiosity, and to show off my often-reluctant friends.

Farworld Pioneers represents two major parts of my life as a gamer: playing old MS-DOS (For those who don’t know, it’s how you played games before Windows!) The classics of childhood and the evolution of online sandboxes in adulthood. That’s how Farworld PioneersThe game was created! As with many other games, it is both a representation of my professional career as a video game designer and a tribute the developers who have made this possible.

But Farworld Pioneers isn’t just an online sandbox game. It’s a 2D adventure sandbox with managerial elements. As a player, you would be one of several guys who could assist at any moment. It is important to design your base so that residents are safe and happy. Bad design can lead to unhappy residents who leave the base and cause it to be less functional. Your base will be a target of pirates and raiders if it becomes wealthy. This makes defenses and tactics essential when building a colony. Confusion of supply lines can disorient residents and cause disruption to supply. Power sources require fuel; food is essential for residents.

The beauty of AI-controlled residents is that they provide a way to delegate tasks you don’t want to do. Instead of spending hours trying to build a huge house from scratch, it’s much easier to have a team of men do it for you while you are out adventuring. Do you get tired of mining? Your guys can help you drag an area. What’s more, they’ll then haul off the materials to be processed so they’re ready for use. And at any time, you can join in and help them, and it won’t disrupt the process; the option’s there if you feel like it. Once you’ve achieved all the things you’d like to do on one planet, you can build a ship with your colonists and launch into space to explore and find new resources, biomes, and technology. There are bosses, secrets, a full tech tree to unlock, and many more features, including a huge multiplayer mode with up to 32 others that I don’t have time to explain here! I’m super excited for everyone to be able to play when it launches on Xbox and with Xbox Game Pass on May 30th!
