Infinity Train, Summer Camp Island, and other shows wiped from HBO Max

HBO Max removed 36 movies and shows from its platform. This includes a lot more family and kids content, such as Sesame StreetSpinoff Elmo’s Not-Too Late ShowThe beloved Cartoon Network program OK K.O. Let’s Be HeroesTeen drama and other teen drama Generation. The highly-acclaimed, but also quite amazing, elimination is one of the worst. Infinity Train — which had already been removed from airing on Cartoon Network, punted to streaming-only with little fanfare, and canceled after just four seasons.

These shows’ creators were shocked and upset by the decision. Julia Pott is the creator of Fantasy Slice-of-Life Series. Summer Camp Island, tweeted about the removal.

“We worked for 5 years to make 100 episodes of animation,” wrote Pott. “We worked late into the night, we let ourselves go, we were a family of hard working artists who wanted to make something beautiful, and HBO MAX just pulled them all like we were nothing. Animation is not nothing!”

The shows were not only removed but also the process was swift. Many fans didn’t have time to react to the news. It’s all part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest move to turn a profit, following laying off 14% of the HBO Max staff and canceling the upcoming Batgirl movie. For the creators of the series and their fans, however, this feels especially harsh.

Are these really the last of your favorite shows?

Technically, episodes and full seasons of most of these shows can still be purchased on Amazon, Google Play and iTunes. However, no one knows how long. Some of these shows include Summer Camp Island Valentino and VictorCartoon Network will broadcast both episodes of.

But as of today, they are nowhere to be found on HBO Max — and, in the case of Infinity Train Mao Mao: Heroes Pure of HeartThe Cartoon Network YouTube has removed all videos official to the channel and tweeted mentions of the cartoons have been removed. The Cartoon Network YouTube channel has been removed. Infinity Train Soundtrack has been removed from all music streaming platforms, as well as official Amazon listings.

It is not uncommon for entertainment media to do this. For years, Disney locked up physical versions of its movies in “the Disney vault,” so that it could rerelease them every so often in limited-time runs. Old shows and movies that weren’t popular sometimes never got physical releases and then just faded out of existence (looking at you, WITCHYou are my love.

But in this case, it’s a little weirder. Some of the titles are only a few years old, but they’re also well-loved by critics. It’s not a matter of an old forgotten thing just getting left behind, but a very deliberate move on behalf of Warner Bros. Discovery to cut losses — despite the fact that doing so undermines the hard work of the people behind these shows and movies. Warner Bros. Discovery’s apparent complete elimination of the existence some of these shows on the internet is just salt in the wound.

This is why Warner did it in the first instance.

Warner Bros. Warner Bros.

“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and Discovery+. That will include the removal of some content from both platforms,” an HBO Max spokesman said in a statement.

Warner Bros. Discovery does not have an official explanation for why these shows were removed. However, one theory holds that it must still pay residuals to HBO Max Originals cast and crew. By removing them entirely… Well, if no one watches something, no one needs to get paid, right? Many of the shows in the shortlist are under the children and family umbrella, so it is possible that Warner Bros. could also be involved. Discovery is looking to expand beyond this demographic.

According to slides shared at Warner Bros. Discovery’s earnings call, the company claims that HBO’s content skews toward an adult male audience, while Discovery’s skews toward adult women. CNBC claimed that Warner Bros. was trying to maximise profits. Discovery decided that kids and family content wasn’t worth pursuing and just axed most of it instead. Warner Bros. could be the culprit. Discovery tried to completely erase some of these shows from its online footprint is because it wants to sell the rights, and they could live on elsewhere, but that isn’t a guarantee.
