I’ll miss the Baldur’s Gate 3 where Gale was a horny disaster man
Larian Studios has been diligently patching Baldur’s Gate 3The team is working on fixing all of the bugs that are affecting the quality of the game. One of those fixes is making it so all of your party members aren’t quite so horny all the time, which is overall a relief. Don’t get me wrong; I love the drama, but I settled down early with my beautiful vampire boyfriend. I, on the other hand loved the hilarious story that developed between Gale and myself through my initial playthroughs of Acts 1 & 2. Now things are so awkward between us that I just keep him at camp, where he can’t cause any more trouble.
Some reason is why? Baldur’s Gate 3It was as if he thought that I would choose the romance route. I was never openly hostile or rude to him — that seemed unnecessary. But I wasn’t particularly encouraging either. If anyone asked me about Gale I’d always tell them no, and then move on. After my crew had cleared out the goblins’ camp and saved Druid Grove, we hosted a camp party. Gale said I should make time for his company, and that we could sneak away together to the woods in order to have a transcendental experience. Astarion sarcastically inquired if I’d rather scamper with Gale. Gale can go sucking an egg if he wants to, but I had a fling with Astarion.
Gale was probably just waiting in the woods for me. So I relaxed, thinking that it would end his obsession. An old mentor of Gale’s showed up, carrying a dire message. Gale’s ex-girlfriend, a literal goddess, required an act of penance from him: an act of sacrifice that would erase a great evil.

This brought up some new scenes and dialogue options with Gale, where he would lament his tragic, inevitable fate, and I would avoid eye contact and say something like “yikes” or “oof.” But still, I avoided all of the It is a good idea to useOptions that are rude. Gale is constantly reading scrolls and grimoires and whatnot, so I just assumed he’d be capable of reading a room.
And boy, was I mistaken. While I was progressing through Act 2, my party entered a forest that had been cursed by an unnatural plague. Gale asked me to go into the forest with him for a private discussion as we were camped near Moonrise Towers. In the middle a terrifying forest, I found a peaceful glade. Even the sky was enchanted to display the aurora borealis.
Gale begins to share his deepest fears in an awkward discussion. I chose the conversation options closest to “Damn, that’s crazy.” I didn’t want to go nuclear, and so the conversation lurched toward its messy conclusion. Gale confessed his love to me, I told him I didn’t feel the same way, and a second unnatural blight settled down on the land: Uncomfortableness.
After that scene, I didn’t talk to Gale too often unless he wanted to bring up some plot-related exposition. There was one exception to that, after Astarion confessed his true, genuine love for me and we held hands and gazed into each other’s eyes like a couple of sickos. I saw the telltale exclamation point over Gale’s head that meant he had something to say, and I assumed it’d be about the Weave or whatever. Gale instead congratulated my on how wonderful it was that I had fallen in love. When I tried to agree it was great, he cut me off and said we didn’t need to continue the convo. This was all awkward and strange, but it made me happy. In RPGs, players are often asked to pick between good or evil. This was really fun. Baldur’s Gate 3 had a messy side plot where I had to give the “Let’s just be friends” speech to an incredibly powerful sorcerer. I’m not sure if the exact experience I had is possible anymore; it’s possible that it has been patched out. Perhaps on a future playthrough, I’ll learn to love him. He added a lot of texture to the game. The RPG companion was much more memorable. Most RPGs follow a hero-centric template.
