How to get free characters in Honkai: Star Rail

Honkai: Star Rail has a plethora of characters to use, and while you’ll likely have to rely on the gacha system to flesh out your parties, you actually get a ton of free characters just by progressing early in the game.

You can name your character whatever you want. As you play through the game’s story, you’ll unlock multiple forms for them. At first, they’ll start off with The Destruction path and physical type, but you’ll unlock another form at the end of the Jarilo-VI storyline. The second form is The Preservation path and fire type. You can swap freely between the forms by selecting “switch” under their Light Cone.

In general, Trailblazers are strong characters and well worth using. This is especially true in the starting character pool. The physical damage version allows for a big damage hit on the enemy and fire allows you to tank and provoke damage.


March 7th, (The preservation/ice)

The story unlocks March 7th shortly after you start it.

She is a supportive character who shields allies and can also freeze enemy. By using her skill, she will shield allies and counter them. She can also freeze enemy at the beginning of a battle.


Dan Heng

Dan Heng and March 7th are unlocked very early on in the story.

He deals massive single-target wind damage. A buffing technique can be used to make him stronger before a battle.


Asta (The Harmony/Fire)

Asta will be the person you are guaranteed to get from this gacha pulling tutorial.

She’s a fire-type buffer, increasing the speed and attack of her allies with her skills. She can start battles with AoE damage from her technique.


Serval (The Erudition/Lightning)

Serval, a character that is free to all players who have reached a specific number of registrations. You can claim her from your inbox as soon as you’re able to access that menu.

She specializes multi-targeted lightning attacks. Her skill can also apply shock damage-over-time to targets and she’ll deal even more damage if her targets are shocked. The technique she uses allows her to randomly deal lightning to an enemy, and then all of them are shocked.


Natasha (The Abundance/physical).

Natasha is unlocked as soon as you encounter her in the Jarilo VI story.

She’s a healer through-and-through and mainly focuses on restoring HP to allies. If you’re not running March 7th, you probably should run Natasha to get some healing and defensive options in. She uses a technique that hits an opponent and then applies a debuff of weakness to all other enemies.


Herta, the Erudition/Ice

Herta can be unlocked for free if you complete World 2 of Simulated Universe. You’ll get additional Eidolons for completing World 4 and 6.

Herta also attacks multiple targets but she is an expert in ice. She’ll launch follow-up attacks when enemies drop below a certain percent of their max HP. Her technique buffs up her attack, similarly to Don Heng’s.


Qingque is the Erudition/quantum

Qingque is yours when you complete Memory Stage 3 in Forgotten Hall. Honkai: Star Rail’s endgame.

Qingque’s multi-targeted quantum attacks are augmented by mahjong like tiles. She draws random tiles during the fight and, if she manages to get four of a kind, gets a boost in her attack. The technique she uses allows her to begin with only two tiles.
