The first camp that you build at the end tutorial contains a Ruined Mapstone. A prompt will appear on-screen explaining what the deal here is: “find or build another to fast travel between them.”

You will most likely not possess the items necessary to rebuild a Ruined Mapstone. As you’ll also quickly find, traveling great lengths in Return to Moria is quite slow thanks to the limited stamina (and possibly the short legs) you have as a dwarf, and the enemies you’ll encounter along the way. To rebuild the Ruined Mapstone, you will need:

  • Black Diamond x1
  • Stone 30
  • Steel Hammer

Our guide to obtaining Black Diamonds is available on our website. Return to Moria, so we won’t go into too much detail on that here. Note that you won’t be able to craft a Steel Hammer, however, until you have Steel Ingots. If you’re looking for more room to cart this all around, consult our guide on how to expand your inventory.

As you explore, you’ll find more Stone Hearths throughout Moria, all of which you can rebuild. Ruined Mapstones can be found near some of the Stone Hearths. They are also able to be reconstructed using similar materials. If you only have 3 Black Diamonds you can also build your own Mapstone, with the ability to choose where you want it. The Mapstone must remain within the Hearth build zone.

You can use the Mapstones to travel quickly to another one once you’ve activated at least two. Mapstones are added to a list when you activate them, so that you can choose to travel anywhere from the list. They will be divided by each of the four areas in the game.

  • Western Halls
  • Lower Deeps
  • Dwarrowdelf
  • Barazinbar

It’s worth noting that fast travel isn’t instant; all it does is skip the process of walking there yourself. After the loading screen has passed and time passed, you will need food, stamina, and sleep. In many cases, fast travel can be a blessing. Return to Moria, but you’ll need to put in the legwork before it becomes available.
