How Jackbox Games selects the perfect games for a brand new Party Pack

Parties are popular for their ability to grab the attention of the public, and often become the center of the news. There’s an exception to the usual rule: The Jackbox Party Packs’ audience is secretly enormous; over 72 million game rooms were created in 2021. This pack contains a variety of games that are popular on Twitch. However, they can also be used in family settings. They are very easy to use and understand. You can play most of these games on just one console while others have access to your phone. Microtransactions are not allowed. There is no skinner box, bonus log-ins or hooks. It is all seamless and welcoming.

The Jackbox Party Pack model works because of the regular releases and consistent quality — which isn’t easy to pull off. All new games are expected to be available in the fall of 2022, according to the latest announcement. It’s a welcome addition, as the COVID-19 pandemic has left people feeling disconnected, and the Party Packs have become a staple in digital birthday parties, office events, and friends groups.

Every Party Pack includes a set of games. These games encourage competition and mean-spirited, but ultimately hilarious jabs. Click the ButtonOder You can survive the internet. Some are brain teasers or trivia games that can be played in a quiet environment, such as Guesspionage Oder Blather ‘Round. It’s the sheer variety of games that are viable to play again, and again, and again with friends that make them such a draw. Jackbox Games’ party games have become more sophisticated and consistent.

“When we see new groups of people playing or folks who don’t consider themselves gamers, or gravitate towards video games, who are suddenly doing that with family or friends, it’s awesome,” said Mike Bilder, CEO of Jackbox Games, in an interview with Polygon. The team rushed to respond to the demands of the pandemic. “It’s a testament to a pretty, pretty talented engineering team that we have internally — it’s probably an overlooked thing for a lot of people, you’re just looking at the TV you’re playing on. But there’s a lot of technology happening on the cloud, on your controller, there’s a lot going on there. It’s been pretty refined over the years.”

Jackbox Games immediately begins looking for new ideas as soon the Pack is launched. “When we launched Party Pack 8, we immediately got the studio together — and everyone in the studio can participate in this process,” said Bilder. “If they have an idea they want to paper and pencil test or we’re working on a prototype of something, there’s a process of that open to the entire studio.”

The titles are approved once the original ideas have been submitted to the studio’s formal committee, which rotates each year. It’s a careful balance — the team wants to have accessible, low-lift games like QuiplashOder Fibbage, As well as titles that are more involved and complex, such as Tee K.O Oder Click the Button. The format of a pack leads to creativity, because each pack comes with five games — there’s inherently room to experiment.

“If you don’t like drawing games,” Bilder said, “there’s four other games in the pack. Maybe the person who isn’t into the drawing game is gonna like the other games. So there’s a formula of trying to put out a well balanced pack. If we greenlight a drawing game right off the bat, and there are multiple drawing games on the table, we’ll say ‘hey, let’s hold off on this for a future year.’ Even if it’s a really strong concept, you don’t want two or three drawing games in the same pack.”

Some minigames get canned as the titles are reduced. Others go into a backlog that can be revisited later in years. Bilder notes that some of the packs’ most popular games have been pitched multiple times before they’re finally accepted.

Another rule the team holds to is that they will not feature more than one sequel in a pack; you won’t see SurviveThe Internet 2 Quiplash 4In the same hypothetical group. To determine which games are going to get a sequel, data is analyzed by the team. “We know who’s playing, what they’re playing, what games are popular, and we can see which games in the back catalog are really strong and popular still.”

This push for variety is working well for Jackbox Games — especially because the company was originally built off the success of the You Don’t Know Jack trivia franchise in the 90s and early 2000s. In the 2000s, Jackbox Games went into hiatus. There were brief Facebook forays. “The first Party Pack was put together very haphazardly by a very small skeleton crew,” said Bilder. This team used technology from a mobile video game. Lie Swatter, and repurposed it to work as a connection to the host’s lobby.

“Growing from there became a process of – how do we do this on an annual basis? We are a small group that has five games to share and then we push these out on 10-12 platforms each year. It’s been a challenge for us — we’ve refined the process, refined criteria that worked for our games.”

Some titles, like the classic You Don’t Know Jack franchise, required a huge investment — editorial, voice over, sourcing trivia. This is because these games require a lot less resources to make. Jackbox Studios has evolved and they have been able build better systems over the years. The Party Pack 8For instance, a shared menu system, which initially appeared small but actually made a big difference in quality of life, was able to make measurable improvements.

Jackbox Party Pack 9 is on the way and is set to arrive in fall 2022, as well as a Jackbox Starter Pack with three of the series’ most accessible games. The annual model and constant changing of the product is very different from developers who focus on upgrading the same core game, but the strategy is clearly working — and there are still few social experiences as fun as jettisoning your friends out to space in Click the ButtonYou can also get a terrible punchline applauded.
