How Brothers in Hell Went from a Dream to Reality

Based upon a dream that I had in 2018, I’ve been working on it since 2019 until I brought that dream to life in the form of a game. Although it took a lot longer than I expected, I persevered and worked until the game was ready.

Brother in HellShares the story of two brothers killed in their quest to liberate and protect the people of desert from Apocalypse Bringers. Because of that event, Death gave them the chance to come back as an “Emissary of your Wish” to finally fulfill the objective

The challenge of creating an open world in a game that is story-driven was significant. It was a real challenge to create an open world that allowed players to explore without restriction while still maintaining the story and constraints. It was no easy task to come up with the idea to add boundaries that don’t feel like boundaries.

Another challenge was creating a captivating narrative. The main story was inspired by a dream that I had. However, other stories were needed as well to engage and encourage exploration of the various subplots in the world.

Stories are told with a soul-like quality, drawing inspiration from the modern classics. It was a challenge to create narratives which were both emotionally moving, provided a reflection moment or morally unclear situations and that were thematically coherent. While the stories of both allies and opponents were diverse, they adhered to an overall storytelling theme and style, which enhanced the immersive experience.

This game was going to be bullet hell!

The implementation of stealth in an effective way was key: it slowed down the pace, and the open-world gives you a short break between boss battles.

The journey from the initial idea to the game’s release was marked by rejections and setbacks. It was disappointing to see the concept and prototypes rejected multiple times. Persistence and continuous improvement based on the feedback of my friends were key in bringing this dream to reality. The development process was defined by overcoming rejection, turning it into motivation for improvement and drinking lots of coffee.

The game transformed into an immersive, fully realized experience as a result. Open worlds with their stories and obstacles became canvasses for gameplay and story exploration. The struggles faced during the development only strengthened the game’s foundation, resulting in a final product that not only fulfills the dream but also exceeds the expectations that I’ve set for it.

The dedication, passion and creativity that goes into every element of the game is what I want players to feel.Brother in Hell. The game’s final form turned out to be an unique blend of action, stealth, and deep stories, inviting players to embark in a journey that goes beyond mere gameplay, delving into the depths of human emotions and the complexity of wishes.
