How Brothers in Hell Went from a Dream to Reality
Based upon a dream that I had in 2018, I’ve been working on it since 2019 until I brought that dream to life in the form of a game. Although it took me slightly longer than I expected, I persevered and worked until the game was released.
Brother in HellThe story is told of two brothers, who were murdered while on a mission to free the desert’s people from the Apocalypse Bringers. Because of that event, Death gave them the chance to come back as an “Emissary of your Wish” to finally fulfill the objective
It was a challenge to create an open-world game for a narrative-driven story. It was a real challenge to create an open world that allowed players to explore without restriction while still maintaining the story and constraints. It was no easy task to come up with the idea to add boundaries that don’t feel like boundaries.
Another challenge was creating a captivating narrative. Although the story I told was based on a dream, it wasn’t the only one. There were also other parallel stories which needed to be compelling and serve as an encouragement for exploring and discovering various subplots.
The stories, which are based on modern classics and narrated in an almost soulful manner, draw inspiration from them. It was a challenge to create narratives which were both emotionally moving, provided a reflection moment or morally unclear situations and that were thematically coherent. While the stories of both allies and opponents were diverse, they adhered to an overall storytelling theme and style, which enhanced the immersive experience.
This game was going to be bullet hell!
The implementation of stealth in an effective way was key: it slowed down the pace, and the open-world gives you a short break between boss battles.
The journey from the initial idea to the game’s release was marked by rejections and setbacks. It was discouraging to have the early prototypes and concept rejected so many times. Persistence and continuous improvement based on the feedback of my friends were key in bringing this dream to reality. The development process was defined by overcoming rejection, turning it into motivation for improvement and drinking lots of coffee.
The game transformed into an immersive, fully realized experience as a result. It was the open world, with all its challenges and stories that became a canvas to explore both narrative and gameplay. The struggles faced during the development only strengthened the game’s foundation, resulting in a final product that not only fulfills the dream but also exceeds the expectations that I’ve set for it.
The dedication, passion and creativity that goes into every element of the game is what I want players to feel.Brother in Hell. The game’s final form turned out to be an unique blend of action, stealth, and deep stories, inviting players to embark in a journey that goes beyond mere gameplay, delving into the depths of human emotions and the complexity of wishes.
